QB handlingI read alot of posts saying BLM is our only option at QB this year so JJ has to go with him. I think you are all absolutely correct given the inexperience and lack of pure arm strength of Smith. The question is why are we in this position? Its ludicrous. Forget JW if you want to, why didn't we get a Juco in here just in case? Or a transfer last year that would be eligible now. JJ has been here long enough not to be in this QB no mans land right now.
Re: QB handlingHave to remember who/what we are...this is SMU...the laughing stock of college football the past 20 years. JJ went after some JUCO QBs when he 1st arrived, but appears he has now settled on doing this over the course of a 5 yr plan. After all, he has that security. We just need Bo Levi to show next week that he is better than what he showed last night. Same goes for some of the receivers. We just need to be better than 1-11 and hopefully SIGNIFICANTLY better by season's end. JJ and anyone who knows anything about college football knows he is still a few recruiting classes away from fielding a more competitive team
Re: QB handlingi don't buy that. Look at McNeal, he in upperclassman and a transfer. And we need him on the field right NOW. This notion that we have to play a qb who is not ready because we are building for the future is absurd. JJ shouldn't have even applied for the waiver on McNeal if this was all about the future. He would be nice to have in JJs fourth year but will now graduate next year.
Re: QB handlingRemember its all about the 'JJ system' and bringing in a JUCO QB really wouldn't work as they would still have to learn the system and understand all the routes, reads etc.and still would take time.
The boy had a bad game and it started off so bad for him with all the missed catches which must have affected his confidence from the start. If the recievers had made those catches and made the first downs then each success would have built upon the prevous and then maybe BLM would have excelled.Just sayin.....
Re: QB handlingA running back position is way diffferent then the QB spot....the RB's run through their blocking holes and use their instincts much more than a QB in this system right or wrong.
Re: QB handlingHoop Fan this has been my point when I keep saying SMU needed to take another QB last year . Who annoited BLM as definite superstar that we only need 3 QBs? We take 35 WRs and 42 DBs but only have 3 QBs? What if he gets hurt. Once again I'm going to try an erase his performance last nite from my mind just like I did his freshman year and hope he was sick or this was an aberration. But I'm still not sure that BLM is that talented a QB. Maybe after a few more years of watching June Jones' brand of the Run and Shoot I'll understand. BTW I believe June Jones had success with a JUCO-wasn't Dan Robinson-I think that was his name.

Re: QB handlingPonyscott, you are missing my point. that was to illustrate the point that we are not and cannot simply be bulding for the future. On the qb spot, the failing is exactly that no other qbs are prepared to play other than BLM. as i said, we needed transfer on the roster last year who would be eligible and system ready right now. Plus this notion that jjs system is so complicated that no juco could run it is crap. BLM can't run it now so whats the difference?
Re: QB handlingi hope blm proves me wrong after watching 13 games, but he is not a gunslinger
WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
Re: QB handling
Sure he's a gunslinger - that only implies that he fires alot of bullets, it says nothing towards his accuracy.
Re: QB handlingSeems like we are in a catch-22. JJ won't change qb's because none of the others have any experience and they won't get any experience because he will not change qb's.
Perhaps some of the qb's coming in next year will change JJ's mind. GO PONIES!!!
Re: QB handling
I hope that happens, but remember UAB's defense is better than SFA's. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: QB handlingFirst let me say I am extremely happy that JJ is our coach.
But back in November of a couple of years ago, I wanted Fran to be named HC. Not because I thougth he was a better coach, but simply because I thought Fran would immediately make our team older via the JC route. I think JJ is the better coach, but the delay in hiring him cost us a recruiting year. Yes Yes….I get it…we are merely fans posting on this board and have 1/100th the knowledge of our HCs, but for the life of me, I simply don’t get this “rebuilding†phase our teams always go through that keeps us perpetually young. Look at our OL…ridiculous how young they are. Look at our QB position…JJ has yet to recruit a certified stud. If JJ had reservations about JWill, he absolutely had to go the JC route. He didn’t and now look where we are. Memo to Coach Jones, please lay off the WR signings for a couple of months and get us JC OL/DL help. Memo to Coach Doh….you were stupid to bring in 7 freshmen. Finally, I refuse to judge BLM on one game; but if he gets hurt, we have zero backup plan….other than a RS freshman who at a 5.0 ranking is the lowest rated Rivals recruit of the JJ era + yet another true freshman QB nobody else offered. Let's all hope this was simply a bad night for BLM.
Re: QB handlingWeren't we looking at getting Jeremiah Masoli(current QB at Oregon) at one point? I remember seeing him on the board awhile ago. BLM is trash, and he looks like trash not only because of his god awful play on the field, but his heinous tattoo. He looks like and Eminem wannabe from Nacogdoches.
BRING ON DON CANYON!!!!!! "I love coaching here at SMU University" -June Jones
