1989 "Tribute" at Halftime

Postby PonyTime » Mon Sep 07, 2009 8:47 am

While this could also be filed under the game presentation thread. The tribute to the 1989 team was horrid. Those guys deserve better than the disorganized, chaotic and rushed "tribute" that they received.

Would have been nice to have seen the UCONN finish on the scoreboard as a part of the presentation - I know they have it (heck - I have it at home - will post on YouTube at some point).

totally agree. what should have been a nice nostalgic bit was just another painful confusing moment. that 89 team played with some heart thats for sure.

I agree, they should have at least showed the winning touchdown and celebration on the screen. I saw Mike Romo, but didn't see Jason Wolf, or Michael Bowen. It was a poor presentation.

The announcer said to look at the screen, then nothing happened....

That "presentation" was a travesty to that team. Same for the women's bball team.

it really is pathetic that we didn't have a video presentation (whether the DVD was lost or whatever, I don't know. They should have had a backup). And we couldn't line them up in the middle of the field where a majority of the crowd could actually see them? How about listing some names? I don't care if the bands had a routine to perform, this was more important in my opinion. Seems like Orsini could have made an effort to go to the field and shake their hands. He would have been down there if some type of check/monetary donation had been presented.

In typical S.O. fashion, they can list the people involved in the sellout campaign individually (and make him $), but they don't bother to announce the returnees from the '89 and '99 teams. I appreciate their efforts as well, but it shows where his priorities really are.

That really makes me furious too. I heard them start to mention the team when I was washing my hands in the restroom -- by the time I got to my seat (1 minute?) it was over!

That was really a special group. They weren't in many close games of course, but when they were they were much more "clutch" than a lot of SMU teams since.

I'll never forget the play that opened their careers -- recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff of their first game against Rice, and taking the lead 3-0 in their first game.

The Dallas Morning News preview that year not only said that they wouldn't win a game but that their first touchdown would be against Rice in 1990 (i.e. the following year).

They deserved a much better tribute.
