Nearly four years ago, SMU and UAB met for the first time at Birmingham's Legion Field, the same field on which the teams will renew acquaintances Saturday afternoon.
Thanks to three field goals by Chris McMurtray, a six-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jerad Romo to wide receiver Devin Lowery and a 38-yard touchdown run by running back DeMyron Martin, the Mustangs led the Blazers for much of the game. But when UAB scored with 3:38 to go, it appeared the Mustangs' efforts to end a double-digit road losing streak might fall short.
But Romo led the Mustangs on an 80-yard scoring drive in the game's final 23 seconds, capping off the win with a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bobby Chase as the clock expired to give the Ponies the stunning victory.
Romo visited with PonyFans.com Friday to share his memories of the game, the final drive and the emotions surrounding the victory, which he said was as satisfying as any in his football career.
