AttendanceUAB had official attendance at 18,082. From the choppy video feed our side couldn't have had more than a thousand. Did anyone at the game see 17 K on the other sidelines, or did Sewell, Staubach, et al. agree to buy blocks at all of our games...???
Re: Attendancelooked like no more than 200 on the SMU side to me...about the same as Rice brought last week to play in the rain
Re: AttendanceIf our student section and the band wasn't on the other side of our stadium, it would look almost as vacant as that side of Legion Field. We get about 2 sections sold to the visiting team, which is likely higher than UAB because most of the schools we play at home are closer than B'ham.
Re: AttendanceIt is interesting to hear the crowd estimates from the people who went to the game.

Re: AttendanceSort of hard to call given that stadium is so huge. But I would be shocked if there were 15,000 people there....sort of like when we played Tulane in the Superdome last year.
I will say there was a nice sized contingency of SMU fans there and we were loud. ![]() Pony Up!
Re: AttendanceI would say we had about 500 SMU fans on the far side. We did get pretty loud a couple of times. There also may have been some SMU fans on the home side because that sun was pretty brutal and people may have headed for the shade. As for how many fans were on the other side, I would say UAB had about 10-15K - it has hard to tell because the stadium is so big and everybody is so spread out on that side. That stadium reminds me a lot of Rice.
Re: AttendanceWe joked that there were about 400 on the SMU side... including the players, coaches, trainers...
Regardless, we had a blast. I really liked when we chanted SMU. I was lucky to be with 2 SMU ladies looking great in red and white sun dresses, Boulevard style, which is quite a contrast to the Legion Field atmosphere. I'd guess the UAB side had about 10K. Their band is loud, especially when they sneaked over to the SMU side and popped out from the tunnels to play little ditties. I'd take our student section for a half over theirs for a full game. **Highlight- the SMU fan who brought the loud kazoo!! Hilarious, especially when he played it back at the UAB band when they attacked our side.
Re: AttendanceWait til we play Marshall. Last time, except for SMU staff and player's parents, I was it. It was kind of embarrassing, but I got offered lots of beer and food.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

That was big hoss
Re: AttendanceHow was their game day presentation? From the live video it sounded like they blasted a lot of random songs for several seconds. And was it raining at all? I thought the announcer said that
Re: AttendanceI liked their game presentation. The announcer made calls only when appropriate and pronounced names correctly. No annoying advertising, but then again Legion doesn't have a video board, which was a negative. It would've been nice to see replays because there were so many big plays and you could only speculate how Bell got hurt. A few songs every once in a while, but not overkill. Their band was the main source of music. No rain, but it was hot and muggy especially first half.
There was no ATM and no concessions took plastic. We had to buy a $10 UAB t-shirt from the pro-shop to get cash back.
Re: AttendanceIt never rained and we were in the sun all day.
They really had no game day presentation to speak of.... Like us, they had trouble with the PA system and the ref's mics as well in the beginning. The screen on the scoreboard is tiny so you couldn't really tell what was on there. They probably were playing some random songs but they weren't memorable. It wasn't a big deal either way. They did, however, sell sno-cones at their concession stand. ![]() Pony Up!
Re: Attendancefor those who went, go to youtube and search iron bowl 1996, watch the video and remind yourself that's the same place we were sitting in on Saturday. Shocking, really. I guess one could do the same with the Cotton Bowl.
