Delzell

That name rings a bell. He was a good player for SMU back in the day. Glad to see his son doing well at SD.

Matt Delzell was one of the best pure shooters I've ever covered in high school. His team's opponents always knew he was getting the ball, and they doubled him all over the floor. He's not lightning-fast, and he's not a great leaper, but they couldn't stop him. He hit everything he threw up there in high school (at Dallas Jesuit), and he's a great guy, too. Best of luck to him.

Matt's dad, Larry, was one heck of a "pure shooter" himself. That's my era at SMU, watching Delzell, Bobby Rollins and Gene Phillips light things up from the perimeter. If those guys had played with a 3 pt line, they really would have been something special.

Larry was a guest at halftime of the radio broadcast last night and spoke fondly of the night he and Gene Phillips combined for 58 pts in a win against UT...Gene hit 51 and Larry had 7 pts that night!
