We are SMU Mustangs

Postby CalallenStang » Sun Sep 20, 2009 12:00 pm

and we will be 'til we die. And I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trade being a Mustang for anything in the world.

We just gave away a game at Washington State, and we're 2-1. There are people on this board who say "Screw this team," "this team is done," "we will be lucky to win another game," "I'm not going to any other games this season," "wake me up when next year is here."

The "All Grit, No Quit" campaign may not be the best for our team this year (due to events involving Willis, etc.), but our fans need to take that slogan to heart. 20 years of losing has given this fan base plenty of grit. It's time that this fan base shows no quit.

BE PROUD YOU ARE A MUSTANG! BLEED RED AND BLUE! SUPPORT THIS TEAM THROUGH THICK AND THIN! NEVER, EVER QUIT ON SMU!

Dude, the fact that this fan base still even thinks about SMU at the beginning of each season year after year is evidence of 'No Quit'. I can't blame anyone for walking away for the rest of the season.

I don't know why I keep putting myself through this nightmare every year, and investing myself emotionally in something that will just leave me crushed. If I COULD walk away forever, I would. And my mental health would be better for it. Probably my liver too.

I've only been around since 2001. I can't imagine how these guys from pre-1986 feel.

I understand the frustration and I am feeling it as well. I understand walking away from the TCU game as a way of public protest so that we can be heard that but let's go the rest of the games starting with ECU.

and those who have followed SMU athletics for most of their lives understand that with the exception of a few years, SMU has played losing football. I'd have to look it up but pretty sure we are under .500 all time.

I've been following the Ponies since the early 60's (Coach Fry was a neighbor) and have to say I've enjoyed more SMU basketball success than football

I think I've become more avid since I moved away from Dallas the year we were handed the death penalty

as much as I wish we had more hard core fans like the big public schools have, I've got to admit it's good to know I can get a good seat at our games whenever I get a chance to visit Big D

I have been going to SMU games since 1989 when i was only 4. To be honest i dont think i have been to a game we won over a D-1 team since the 90's. However. It is still my favorite team. And JJ was actually my favorite coach before he came here, as I watched all the Hawaii games that were on from 2004-2007. Anyway I think we will be good in 2010 or 2011. I didnt have any expectations for this season. Thought we would be improved but still a 2 win team. But I guess I am still going to the TCU game. But only because I want to party with my brother that goes there ;)

SMU was well above .500 All-Time until Ken Pye showed up

I had to go back and look that one up; you are right

SMU was 379-312 overall before the death penalty (thanks to the early 80's)

During my years at SMU, we were 22-21-1 but it sure seemed like a down period because Hayden got fired

I always liked Hayden as a coach but IIRC he did not interface real good with some of the alumni and also some of the Dallas business people. Perhaps that is why he was more successful in a less sophisticated environment like Iowa.

GO PONIES!!!
