Publishers' take on last night

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s amazing what two wins can do for a program. Yesterday’s loss was disappointing for anyone that has been watching SMU grow in the last year, but the fact remains that the Mustangs loss to a Pac 10 team on the road in overtime. While it’s easy to hit the panic button, insult a specific player on offense, and question Coach Jones’ decisions, no one expected SMU to be 2-1 at this point six months ago. Most experts coming into the season felt the Mustangs would win three to four games; so far SMU is on track.

While Bo Levi Mitchell’s second half performance was horrendous, Bo is the Mustangs quarterback. Period! He is the best option at the time for SMU to win. Anyone that argues otherwise has not been to a practice. Fans can stop the “bench Bo” talk. According to the Dallas Morning News, Coach Jones said it was not going to happen.

While it’s easy for fans to say, “Josh, you haven’t been around the program long enough. You don’t know what its like,” you are right. But I know there is one person who wants SMU to win more than anyone else. It’s June Jones! This isn’t a case of someone’s ego or not wanting to admit that he was wrong, it’s a case of there is not a better option. You can be mad at Coach Jones for not recruiting a better quarterback or recruiting a junior college quarterback, but don't be mad at Coach Jones for sticking with Mitchell.

This team is ahead of schedule. The fact that Coach Jones has taken a team in his second year and has turned them into a bowl contender is amazing. Just be patient SMU fans, remember this wasn’t a quick fix over night.

I did not particularly disagree with any of that until the second to last sentence. You lose all credibility as a writer if you can call the team that played the second half yesterday a "bowl contender"....
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

also couldnt hurt to pull back off the superlatives...a team that a) had to come from behind in the 4th quarter, b) blew a 28-7 halftime lead before salvaging a win, and b) blowing a 17 point lead by way of hand delivering 14 points and self surrendering at least 3, should never...ever...be described as "amazing."

That post and complacent attitude pretty much sums up the state of smu football program right now. You are happy with being 2-1 instead of being 3-0 which we should be. Let's be happy with the moral victory of competing with a pac-10 team on the road!!! yayyyy!!! NO! washington state is garbage and should not even be considered a pac 10 football team..let alone a d1 football team. Instead of being happy with the moral victory..maybe we should be be sickened by losing to that team. Im not saying the attitude of the fans and people who post on these boards have any effect on the score of games...but the players have that same attitude and losing mentality because they have not been winners and have not been exposed to success. Instead we have been happy losing by a score to a good houston or tulsa team. Until that attitude changes, we wont know how to win games and wont be succesful. Yes, I realize the experts picked us to have 3 or 4 wins this year and by losing to wsu, we are right on scheduele for that...but why are we happy with fufilling the expectations of the media who doesnt really know the program like we do...whats the point in playing the game if we are just gonna go by the pre season expectations as a measuring stick? maybe we should be a little hungry..want to exceed those expectations.

SMU was a "bowl contender" just three years ago.
