He was in my class ('76) at SMU. I still think that no one who has played at SMU has topped him since that time. He DESERVES to be honored more than any pony I can think of and I am shocked and disappointed that he hasn't been.

completely agree. when they retired Koncak's jersey they said Ira would be next and wanted to do something every year. it didn't happen last year... hopefully this year. Ira could be the biggest proponent SMU basketball has.

He was in my class as well. Nice guy. I remember he had to take swimming with me our freshman year. However, we used the outdoor pool at first and he could just stand there since its only 6 feet deep. Coach Quick threatened to move us to the diving well after that. Clearly one of the five best players in SMU history. Krebs, Phillips, Terrell, Sasser, Koncak. Armstrong and Ross also should get nods.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I thought Butch Moore was a better PG than Kato was. Not sure who my PG would be on the "all time SMU" team

Saw both play throughout their SMU careers.

I would rather have Ira on my team….I would also have honored him before Jon, if for no other reason than the mere fact that Ira is older.

Agree 100%.

Kato gets bonus points in my book that put him above Butch Moore because he rose to the ocassion and carried SMU on his back in outrageously great performances in the SWC Tournament Championship and the victory over Notre Dame and David Rivers in the NCAA. The last 15 minutes of ther SMU/Baylor SWC Tournament Game at Reunion was perhaps the most memorable clutch performance I remember in SMU History as Kato bombed 3 after 3. Moore probably had the more consistent career.

I was in Chapel Hill to see Kato drive past Rivers, down the lane and put an "in your face" stuff on Notre Dame's big man (can't recall who he was). That was an impressive performance that night...but Butch Moore was just solid night in, night out. Not much flash, just a strong PG who was pretty solid protecting and distributing the ball.

I'd like to see what kind of difference either one of those guys would make on our current roster. I thought Butch, in particular, made everyone around him better and that's the PG's job.
