A Tale of Two CitiesIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us...
I am going to take a logical look at TCU's recruiting which lead to their current approach to the Top 10 and juxtapose it to the start of the June Jones era. Now, after perusing Rivals, I've noticed that prior to 2009, TCU's recruiting classes (the starters on the current team) have been very similar to June Jones current classes (only slightly better by a very small margin). It's almost startling that recruiting classes filled with mostly 3 star and two star recruits can be so successful, even against BCS teams. Now, assuming June Jones is at least as good of a Coach as Gary Patterson, we should logically have similar results within the next four years as TCU. Take a look at SMU current recruiting vs. TCU recruiting which lead up to this season (around 2006)... Re: A Tale of Two Citiestotal [deleted]. Go back and check the total offers from TCU staters to SMU's starters-it will not even be close. It wasn't close in any of the last 5 years. Another point-is that there has been an increase of about 25% in the number of Texas 3+ stars in first last year and even greater amount in 2009. You are comparing grade inflated classes. June Jones is not burning up the recruiting scene as far as outrecruiting other teams. He is doing a credible decent job of finding players most of whom have no other offers-but it doesn't compare to almost any TCU class in the last 10 years. About 10-12 of SMU's commits have no other offers-abother 3-4 have offers from very weak programs. Only a handful can be described as highly recruited. I have said I like about 4-5 of these guys that nobody else really has offered, but SMU classes do not compare to TCU-and it won't compare when all is said and done this year. SMU will be in the mid 70-80s and TCU will be about 60 or below-if they keep winning it will be the 40s.. And while your at iy compare the average per recruit for SMU v. TCU. Not even close. TCU takes very small classes and keeps them in school. SMU has in very many recent years taken huge classes and ended up running recruits off and has had a very high turnover rate compared to TCU. It inflates SMU's total points to include players who never contributed to the program. That is truthful fair comparison between SMU and TCU recruiting in recent years-I'm sure it will [deleted] people off but the initial post was ridiculously blowing smoke down your [deleted].

Re: A Tale of Two CitiesI can see where your coming from. SMU has a huge disadvantage by not retaining classes and consistently playing young players. And I can't argue with your inflation argument either. However, TCU has become a perennial top 25 team with mostly 3 star recruits, and a rare 4 star sprinkled in. I think that shows that SMU has a chance, because I personally have been impressed with June Jones evaluation of talent. In fact, many could argue some of his recruits are already making an impact. A lot of these players Jones has switched positions and could potentially become impact players. I think he doesn't have a choice to play the young players right now because they are the best for his system, but he intends to build a better redshirt/retention of recruits. Overall, I still think we can rebuild this bad boy and do what TCU has done...but we are at a crucial juncture these next two years. Our next two years will be regarded much like the quote as we learn to win as a team and as fans...

Re: A Tale of Two CitiesYou will never be able to compare TCU and SMU's football programs. SMU will never have the mindset that TCU has had since they were in the WAC and beat USC in the Sun Bowl. Since then TCU has done everything they could to get better and it shows. SMU will never go there!
Re: A Tale of Two Cities
Completely disagree!! We will get there.. it may take more than a couple of years but we WILL be competitive with the little froggies. GO PONIES!!!
Re: A Tale of Two CitiesTCU had four 4-star signees in their 2009 class - we are not anywhere near that. But, we are beating out Louisiana-Monroe for a lot of players in the 2010 class!
"It'd be nice to see Jesse Henderson break one here."
Re: A Tale of Two CitiesIt's called committment and single mindedness. TCU has it, SMU never will!
Re: A Tale of Two CitiesYou really can't compare previous years recruiting patterns as Bennett was not a good recruiter and liked to take a gamble on recruits and the new regime is going after anybody and everybody and isn't afraid to ask the top recruits. Their mind set is different as they are proud to sell the University, The City of Dallas and its job market after graduation and the great facilities that SMU has and sells it that way....and it pays off in the recruiting battles....it only takes one or two 4 Stars to set a pattern..its hard to get that first one. I think back in the Pony Express era it was the great Harvey Armstrong out of Houston Kashmere that started the pattern of getting the top recruits to come here. It will take a good stud recruit like that to tip the scales. It will happen and this coaching staff is on top of it and understands NFL type coaching techniques that kids are attracted to.....it gives these 2-3 Star recruits hope that they can get to the next level. And some of these Class 2-3's can be late bloomers that just haven't had a chance to physically mature yet...
Re: A Tale of Two CitiesTCU's goal, which they will achieve one day, is to be a BCS team. If the Big XII were ever to expand, TCU would be their first choice. I am a Pony, always have been, and have been trained to hate TCU. But I admire their committment.
Re: A Tale of Two Cities
1) Big XII's first choice is unknown, but I have a feeling it would not be TCU. Big XII gains nothing from letting TCU in, other than having another mouth to feed. Big XII already has Metroplex TVs, games in the Metroplex to satisfy their fan bases, Metroplex recruits go Big XII first, etc. TCU would add essentially nothing. 2) SMU made a commitment as well. SMU made that commitment in 2008. TCU made the commitment in 1998.
Re: A Tale of Two CitiesMany of the Conferences will be making more moves in the few years to come....and be sure the Dallas Televison and recruiting market would be on conferences horizon.... I am not sure that the Big 12 is the option...and that is a major reason that Orsini is gearing up with Top 25 goals and also the 'putting butts in seats' this year is another major inititive that attracts attention....If SMU had the program in gear like TCU we would be much prefered as a major market than Ft Worth.
