About the men's and women's BB schedules

Postby George S. Patton » Wed Sep 16, 2009 2:25 pm

Traditionally, we appear to be the last team in DI basketball to release our basketball schedules. Or at least it seems that way. Why is that? Some programs have had their schedules out for a good month.

As I recall, the Sports Information Department always used the rationale that it had to wait for the conference to release its composite schedule before the entire schedule was released.

I'm not buying that. To generate early interest, the "With It" programs at least release their non-conference schedules and then later release the conference schedule.

That's what Memphis does. BTW, our sports information department has had about three weeks because Memphis released its conference schedule on Sept. 8. I know the SID has to wait on Doherty for this, but this is ridiculous. It's going to be October on Thursday and the thing hasn't come out yet.

This is such a yearly PR blunder. I'd kinda like to know who we're playing rather than have several threads on the basketball page devoted to finding out who is on our schedule through OTHER school's web sites.

Actually, it is true that all schools must get approval from the conference before releasing schedules in any sport, and some conferences give approval to all of their schools at once, while others stagger the approvals. Without knowing specifics about the goings-on inside the C-USA office, I would guess that if Memphis got it's release approval before SMU did, it might have something to do with the fact that Memphis is likely to be on national TV (pending the outcome of the Derrick Rose/SAT investigation, I suppose).

Another hurdle, as I understand it, is that all schedules have to be approved by the compliance office, which might be difficult since the new director quit a couple of months after she was hired. Someone also has to make sure that the schedule doesn't conflict with other sports, in terms of facilities, staff, etc. So maybe the hangup here is actually an issue with another sport's schedule. I don't know that — just guessing on that part.

The schedules are set, there's no conflicts with other sports, and I dont know why there hasnt been a formal announcement, yet. Both teams open in Moody on Friday, Nov. 13th, the women at 5:30 against Loyola Marymount and the men at 7:30 against South Florida. I can put up the entire schedule for either team tomorrow, if you want.

The bizarre thing about this is that when you go to the school web site and the men's bb page and look at the upcoming events, the first three home games are listed but we don't release the schedule? Does that make us look really smart?

Well I received a bill for my tickets last week with a due date of Oct. 16. Seems bizarre to get billed without a schedule.

I could not agree more, I thought the same thing when I got my bill. Every time I think they can't invent a new way to do something stupid they surprise me.

About a month ago I tried to log on, but got a message saying that the board had changed software, and my old password "couldnt be converted" (???) and I couldnt make a new password, because the email address that I used to create The XTC no longer exists. So, I had to make a new name at a different email.

Thanks for posting the schedule. Just sorry you had to be the one to do it instead of the people who should have been doing this weeks ago.

I hope the winter and spring are entertaining seasons.
