Women's Basketball receives commitment

Postby George S. Patton » Sun Sep 27, 2009 5:10 pm

It is Flower Mound Marcus post/guard Raven Short. The 5-10 senior is a tweener. Last year, she averaged about 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. She also made about 26 percent of her free throws.

She's an interesting player. I've seen her play a lot at Marcus. I don't expect her to be a high scorer for us when she gets here. I think she could be somebody like a Haley Day or something like that. Not sure if she had other offers. Just learned this a couple of days ago.

Marcus is the high school program that gave us the Colli sisters.

Edit: I changed the headline bc I goofed about that Lady Mustangs. I know better than that.

Thats cool that we recruit so well locally as Rhonda has a great rep here around town.....do we have god chances on some top talent from around the country? We never seem to see top out of state girls interested...BTW I hope our new signee shoots better than 26% from the line or we may have a Lady Shaq here at SMU....would guess its 86%.....

Well, the older one was OK. It was the younger one who was a timebomb. There was the big stink she tried to create with the program when she left and tried to transfer up to Oregon State. this was about 2 years ago. Don't really know what happened after that.

BTW, Marcus was not a good free throw shooting team last year. Hovered around 50 percent for the season.

Janielle Dodds is from Virginia. She worked out OK at SMU, wouldn't you say?

Not sure when you went to school, but our team is not the Lady Mustangs (although we were when I was in school) — it's the MUSTANGS.

Doh hasn't had the success at SMU that Rhonda has.

There is no benefit of the doubt in recruiting. You're either bringing in high level talent or not. No doubt she's a fine coach, but there is no denying that''s a low impact use of a scholarship. She can start throwing them away when we consistently dance, and she wins a game in it.

I believe she was a 5A All District guard as a junior. We can only hope she is in the same mold as Haley Day (DMNs Player of the Year as a HS senior) who quickly became a very good player for SMU.

I'm told Short had visits to TCU and Kansas St. set up before she canceled them.
