General Patton's FatherIt is with great regret that I have been asked to inform you that the General's father, Vincent, passed away this evening about 8pm in Las Vegas. His son and other children were with him when he passed quietly. He is preceded in death by his wife, the General's mother.
A very dignified and gracious man, he battled prostate cancer since 1991, and it had recently returned and metasticized to several of his vertebrae. His family is grateful that the end was not in extreme pain, and that he no longer suffers the indignity of cancer. A retired banker in Minnesota and Nevada, his father left a deep impression on the General, particularly insomuch as it was he who encouraged his son to attend and graduate from SMU, not to mention has guided him in most of life's lessons. You'll have to forgive me. He asked me to extend an apology to board members for his recent overabundance of negativity. I don't know how to be as diplomatic as he was with me. He appreciates all of you, whether you know it or not. He has used the board as a place of respite lately...something to break the difficult waiting. It has not been his intent to spite anybody, if indeed he has. He is naturally passionate, whether right or wrong. He is profoundly grateful even for the sparring. My family and I extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to him and his family in this time of grief. I hope that I did this correctly on his behalf. If I didn't, please attribute it to me, not him. Thx. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
Re: General Patton's FatherMy father passed in 2004 in much the same manner. My condolences to the General and his entire family. Draw strength from the wife and children during this time of sorrow.

Re: General Patton's FatherI pray that you find peace and hope at this time.
I lost my mother 1-1/2 years ago. I found comfort in remembering her faith and kindness throughout her life, and those she touched. I know she is at peace now and that also brings more comfort everyday. I pray that you also dwell on the good and eventually the hurt is replaced with the comfort faith provides. My thoughts are with you and your family. SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: General Patton's FatherOur church family lost a wonderful pastor, leader and person last fall. One of the things I'll always remember from the memorial celebration was one of the speakers saying-to the children in attendance-"We are sad that she's gone, but it was wonderful that she was here..."
I'm sure you have similar thoughts, General. Blessings.
Re: General Patton's FatherI too offer my prayers of support during this difficult time to the General; and, I would like to thank OC Mustang for a very well written, sensitive and informative thread/blog.
Re: General Patton's FatherPrayers and sympathy extended to the General and his family during this time.
Re: General Patton's FatherThe loss of a parent is always a sorrowful event that unfortunately we all have to endure. There is never a good time for it to happen. Look to your faith Patton for your strength to see you through this time and know in your heart that your father is at peace and in a better place. Our thoughts are with you.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: General Patton's FatherBTW, I just saw this thread today. I had forgotten that OCMustang had done this.
Just wanted to let everyone who responded that I really appreciate the sentiments.
