Didn't an SMU student write an editorial last year in The Daily Campus about getting a 'real Mustang' as a mascot? I bet he/she is doing Herkies right now.

About time the school had a real horse instead of the nasty little runt. It was a joke having a team called the Mustangs only to have a small pony as the school mascot.

This is a disgrace. Add this to the cr@ppy game presentation overloaded with ads rather than a proper college atmosphere. I know we are strapped for money, but do we have to sell our soul and what little tradition we have for a buck. I have a hard enough time stomaching the continual losing of our teams and now I have to stomach a bunch of made up market tested BS gimmicks replacing (I know it isn't replacing, but it might as well be) the things that made SMU unique. This is absolutely sorry.

Geez........Much ado about nothing....C'mon now some things do change and a real live Mustang does convey more wild power and stamina and and Peruna will still be around ........traditions change and some for the better and some not...give it a chance. Simmer down........

traditions don't change - that is how they become traditions. This is an artificial creation and like all artificial traditions like third down thunder will fail.

June Jones needs to keep his freggin' head on football and not marketing or what the school mascot is.

This team is a hair and a prayer from 0-3. :x

Alabama has a damn ELEPHANT
UMiami has a bird (*gasp* it's NOT a hurricane?!?!?!)
Notre Dame has a LEPRECHAUN (they must be the fightin' leprechauns, right? We all know Irish folks don't actually look like that!)
TTech has a guy in a BLACK suit riding a BLACK horse... RED raiders???
aTm has a freaking herding dog.

Do you think those school's fans all [deleted] their pants when asked about the mascots? No, they explain that it's a TRADITION, and it's worth keeping it that way. Peruna has a unique story dating back to the 20's, and other than the MBand's style, it's probably the oldest tradition SMU has. I thought we went through this when I was there 5 years ago, and it was resolved.

In addition to all this, I still don't understand the whole 'preserve the spirit of the wild mustang' initiative that we are kicking off by...having a horse wrangled and held on the sidelines during games. This makes no sense to me.

Stallion and Dooby, excellent points, I hope this attempt to jumpstart "tradition" (quick, look at the big horse, ignore the fact that we have only won 4 of the last 20+ games) quickly loses its luster and fades away. Just like the Mustang Maniac.

And as far as JJ changing Hawaii's colors, etc. They were in a pretty tough position with a RAINBOW as their logo and mascot, and JJ gave them the bulk of their history anyways. SMU was key in implementing the forward pass, SMU (and TCU) put Southwest football on the map, SMU played in a Rose Bowl, SMU had Doak Walker, Kyle Rote, Don Meredith, Jerry Levias, Dickerson & James, and somehow during all of that, SMU had Peruna on the sidelines. Adding another horse is ridiculous.

Horsepower is good, can never have to much horsepower..........

Good move. We might as well have a stuffed horse as a Shetland Pony for a mascot. Real problem is not enough horses playing football for us

I hope Peruna kicks you, TheBestAvailable, and ponyscott in the nads at the next home game.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Peruna a miniture horse and NOT a shetland pony? Although similar, there is a difference between the two breeds.

I would think our SID would recognize the distinction. No wonder we throw our traditions away.

Really....simmer down, this is way off the chart and contarary to some of the stuffy posters it makes sense and actually draws attention to the Mustangs plight, both us and the real mustangs...it can work and lets give it a chance...any traditions changing ?? examples .....Stanford Indians now a friggin tree? Miami University was the Redskins and is now the Redhawks...Eastern Washington U was the Savages now is the Eagles...Elon University was the Fighting Christians and they changed to the Phoenix and the crazy one for the history books: St.Bonaventure University...the men’s teams were known as the Brown Indians and the women’s squads went by “the Brown Squaws” until 1979. In 2001 one former female athlete at St. Bonaventure told Indian Country Today, “[A] Seneca chief and clan mothers came over from the reservation and asked us to stop using the name because it meant ‘vagina.’ We almost died of embarrassment.” Since then both wens and women's teams have been known as the Bonnies....traditions changed...but some not for the better .....many colleges changed their mascots because they had to....this one is good and is 'addition to' and not 'instead of'.....sorry I am on the other side here....

I guess some would rather continue to have a miniature horse than a full size horse.
