Deceptive score

Postby Dark Horse » Sun Oct 04, 2009 1:37 am

I hate losing, especially to TCU, but the damn Frogs deserved to win. They were the better team.

With that said, TCU is no top-10 team. They were good, but hardly impressive. The game was a lot closer than the final score for most of it, only to see us wear down against their depth and give up a couple of late touchdowns because our guys were gassed and their second- and third-teamers were just better.

really? I think the score could have easily gotten really, badly out of hand. Of course, in rain game like this weird thing happen but TCU could have easily gotten 2 maybe 3 more TDs. Nice hitting out there though that caused the fumble.

Very convenient take on the game. Are you forgetting that TCU fumbled twice inside the SMU redzone in the 1st quarter? Final score could have easily been TCU 53, SMU 14.

Froggie turn the ball over three time against BYU, Utah or Air Force and see what happens. :)

I don't know. Despite three turnover the Frogs still roll in convincing fashion. Also, football is played for four quarters. You can't play well for one, maybe two, quarters and expect to win the game.

If you're looking for a moral victory, TCUs back ups came into the game much later than I thought they would.

And we dropped a sure pick-6, fumbled inside our own 20, threw 1 unforced int and had a fumble recovery to the 2 reversed (correctly btw). By your logic, the score could just as easily have been TCU 32 SMU 28. Adding and subtracting hypothetical scores is [deleted]. The game was a lot closer than the score, I agree. Still, TCU dominated and deserved to win the game.

That's usually how the better team pulls away, by wearing down the opposition so when the fourth quarter rolls around their opponents have nothing left.

I do think that SMU's defense is much improved over past years. They were flying around a lot more. However, the stat's from the game tonight were pretty lopsided.

First Downs: 18-9 TCU
Rushing: 18/-16 SMU / 53 for 229 TCU
Passing: 17-38/240 SMU / 12-20/189 TCU
Penalties and turnovers were basically equal.
Time of Possession: 25:43 SMU / 34:17 TCU.

IMO, time of possession is the telling stat. SMU had the ball for 10 minutes in the first quarter, then only 15 minutes the rest of the game. The game was decided in the trenches. Turnovers really hurt both teams. If SMU can learn to establish the run they can be effective. They killed TCU on a few shovel plays (even though Jerry Hughes almost took one back to the house).

I agree with the original post. TCU was the better team and deserved to win, no question, but they are not a top 10 team. Texas, Florida, USC, LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Miami, VaTech, maybe Ohio State, and I'll even throw in Oregon the way its playing, would destroy the Frogs. More importantly, I was impressed with the way played and fought last night. We didn't appear intimidated (at least not after the first couple of minutes), and we hung with them for much of the night when past teams would have folded and lost by 50 or 60. Sure, they wore us down at the end, but it's not like they blew us out early. Despite the score, that game gave me great optimism that we'll be able to at least compete with most C-USA teams.

Ur wrong, could have easily been TCU (12-missed extra points) + Jeremy Kerley (34)=46 to 21 (SMOO got screwed on the fumble that Moore ran down to the 2 yd line that officials brought back)

Very simple. TCU was picked to win by 28. Had we not blocked the first extra point, odds are good the final margin would have been 28. Does not matter from where the scores come, it matters what they are when they are added up at the end.

Has Bryan McCann's dropped pick 6 been mentioned? That would have put SMU up 14 -0

You're possibly the only person in America who thinks so. Take off the red-and-blue glasses and watch the replay. And remember -- booth officials don't overrule a call on the field unless they have what they consider irrefutable video evidence that the call was mistaken.
