That's why I like the style of football TCU plays

Postby George S. Patton » Sun Oct 04, 2009 9:08 am

Football is all about being to run and stopping the run. Since the smu ol cannot run block and this defense still can't shut people down 39-14 was inevitable. TCU delivered the message of stark a difference there is between both programs. Rude awakening, folks.

Their style is physical and speed. Give me that combo every time over what we do.

Think about this. June had a great homfield advantage in Hawaii. What was his road record? Just guessing but when the Warriors got off the island, they were pretty ordinary?

I don't think it was a rude awakening becuase anyone who follows football knew this would be a tough physical game. About what I expected offensively but our defense has really improved and didn't back down after being on the field all night. I think our defense is getting there. I would say the disappointment was the coverage teams. TCU's punter has altered his kicking style from 50-60 yard low spirals that are beautiful but returnable to 40-45 yard punts, some knuckleing which are hard to catch and won't be returned by our great returner. TCU has much greater depth which gives them a big advantage on special teams. We played to their strength!TCU,great coaching in that area! Why we kept kicking deep is a mystery and continually placed our defense on our side of the field. Don't forget how long it has taken TCU to get to this point. You have to recruit the players and give them time to develope physically, especially to play that brand of football. Our young guys were overmatched in some areas but they played hard which is a big improvement over last year against one of the best teams in the nation.

I have said this before on this forum and to anyone else who would listen. JJ will make the SMU progran better than it has been but we will never get to TCU's level unless JJ changes his philosophy which is about as likely as a skunk changing his stripes. I read an interview with Brennan, JJ's QB at Hawaii and he said that JJ's goal was to play an entire game without calling a running play and they almost did it once.
I have also said and have an ongoing dialogue with a DMN sportswriter online about the fact that I analysed JJ's record at Hawaii and he had almost no signature wins away from home in Hawaii. I think the only one was against Fresno State. However, that might be somewhat offset by the fact that it must be a little handicap when Hawaii came to the mainland.
Another factor that I believe played a big role in JJ's success at Hawaii was that when he went there, not many teams ran spread offenses so when you played Hawaii, you were seeing an offense you had never played against before. Today, some sort of spread is the rage in college and high school and defenses are tailored to stop the spread. I believe that the teams that concentrate on running the football, especially with some sort of option look from the QB, are going to have a growing advantage until the spread mania goes away.

This really is a sophomoric post, GSP. If you gave us their talent and them ours, we would have killed them.

I really like it when people offer expert fb analysis on a game they did not watch or hear. That is awesome

Yeah, there really was no rude awakening to be had. All those picks for SMU to win? Those were us refusing to pick against the 'Stangs. Ask some of us to actually put MONEY on our boys and a lot fewer would have done it. Me included.

If Obama had bet the federal deficit on the ponies like I advised him to, we'd be in better economic shape.

It's ok for everyone to admit that TCUs program is in a drastically different place than ours right now. They've consistently performed well and have stayed in the rankings. We have consistently choked and have struggled to collect a few wins. There's no one who ACTUALLY thought we had a good chance of winning this game. I mean there's always a chance, but not one worth counting on.

Would not work. He would tax us in order to provide a bail out for the bookies to pay off the bet. At best we would come out even and worst he would probably take the winnings and give them to some other failed program.

No I wasnt there but I read eveything about the game, tracked it, looked at stats every quarter, listened to postgame comments and talked to somebody. I understand the style of football we play and the style of football they play.

But I guess I still don't qualify? Fine. It's the return of the I was there and you werent. Wonderful. Running stats kind of tell a lot don't they?

When you lose by 4 scores and get dominated in the second half like we did -- but those stats and my trusted source -- I'm pretty comfortable saying what I'm saying.

However, we should be really proud of the poster who started the thread telling the qb to f himself. Now that's pretty solid.

Great summary and comments of the game from somebody that didnt see the game and only read Kate's synopsis in DMN. TCU was fast and physical on D but on offense, our D really matched up well. SMU must have ball movement for first downs on offense (which we didnt) TO EAT SOME CLOCK and our special teams were HORRIBLE, our punter had to jump high or scoop the ball off the ground to punt, our deep snapping and KO and Punt teams were not what Coach Gansz would put up with, we miss ya , Coach !

That's why were so lucky to have GSP around — he doesn't need to even see a team to offer his analysis about what is right or wrong (see his volleyball commentary). You weren't there, so spare us your idle rhetoric about a game you didn't even see.
