What Should Coach Do?Many have commented on our quarterback play, but I want to approach the question from a slightly different point of view. What should Coach Jones do? The main question Jones and his assistants have today is what to do about our poor quarterback play in the second half. We have had four games where Bo let down in the second half. We also know he has been sick or injured for all four games. I guess the first question is to sort out why he has had poor second half performance. Is it fatigue aggravated by illness? Is it pressure? Maybe it is both. Whatever the case, what is the best way to deal with it? I think, if I were the coach, I would start Smith and if he is not cutting it then bring Bo back in. Perhaps it would solve the fatigue and/or pressure problem. East Carolina is a winnable game, if Bo doesn't give it away. Bo knows that and he will be putting pressure on himself. That is when he seems to get in trouble. I would hold off Padron until I was sure that neither Bo or Smith could do the job or until Padron is ready. What do you guys think?

Re: What Should Coach Do?
SA, Better question to me is what should Coach HAVE DONE? Answer is a backup plan in case Plan A...(i.e. playing an unproven true freshman) does not work out. Or, even if he does work out, having a backup plan in case Plan A gets hurt. Look at our QBs depth over the past 2 years....I would argue the weakest during the past 20 years. Look at the reliance on the QB position in this offense...I would argue we are as reliant on the QB play in this offense than at any time during the past 20 years. Look at our HC....I would argue the most high-profile / successful during the past 20 years. So why did this high-profile, successful HC paint himself into such a corner with no real options? I have no idea, but quite frankly he is getting what he deserves.
Re: What Should Coach Do?He will continue to take his $5,500 a day and do what ever he wants.
Re: What Should Coach Do?The real question is since BLM has been so banged up one way or another all season why in the heck is he getting all the snaps. Give the kid a break once in awhile especially when he is struggling mightily. This is all on JJ-BLM should not have played this much especially with an ulcer for goodness sakes.
Re: What Should Coach Do?Ok to sum up the responses so far:
Junior says get a lead with Bo and use Smith to hold on to it. So Cal says there is not choice stay with Bo One Trick says the question is irrelevant because none of us are the Coach Change the question. If you are going to sit Bo, when do you do it. The next 4 games are going to be the most difficult to win. Do you sit him in a game your probably going to loose anyway? Do you wait until you have lost 7 games? Again, what should the Coach do?
Re: What Should Coach Do?
Washington State's coach had a decent template for playing his true freshman. Had two pretty effective drives vs USC. Lobster started, freshman played what seems like the last series of the first two quarters, and during the TD drive of the second half.
Re: What Should Coach Do?Someday Red Lobster is going to sit down with his grand-kids and tell them about the Day that Grand Dad Red Lobster lead WSU to a great comeback victory over SMU back in ought nine. Geez

Re: What Should Coach Do?
I think you put Braden in Saturday. He knows enough to throw it around in this offense. The WR's are getting open, sometimes 5-10 yards between the DB. I was on the trip to WSU and more than a few people closer to the team than I, said Bo isn't the best option right now. Not sure who is, but interesting nonetheless...
Re: What Should Coach Do?Putting Braden in for at least a series or two does not seem to be a bad idea, especially if BLM getting tired 2nd half.
Re: What Should Coach Do?Coaches should always be reevaluating their players and coaches and themselves. After that, come out and ask pony fans to be patient and supportive and quit spouting venom on these message boards and at the games at individual players. They are amateur players who are playing for good old SMU and trying their best for a victory. If you are around a person like that at the games, stand up for your players instead of ignoring the offenders. Ask the person to leave and go sit on the other side of the stadium. This is our team and we should support the players, even if we disagree with some of the things that happen on and off the field. Negativity will not attract top recruits. What qb would want to play here and take his lumps while learning the system with all of this hatred. We are so close to turning the corner. The ingredients are here except for a large, proud, dedicated fan base. You don't have to be proud for victories.Be proud of your university and it's students and student/athletes! Show your colors at the games and make it a place where the top high school athletes in Texas want to play and work towards their degree. The victories will come. SMU is known as a place to abtain an expensive and great education. It is also known as a place with so few educated fans when it comes to sports. Maybe we should do like the aggies and teach the students and former students and fans in general on the vitues of true fandom and how to act.
Re: What Should Coach Do?We are pretty much stuck, we have an offense designed to throw the ball 90 percent of the time and have no QB that can throw the ball/grasp the system...
Have to stick with Bo, short of changing the offense to be more run oriented (which btw, is what we should do, but will never happen)......as someone pointed out, this offense requires so heavily on the QB and we don't have one that can get the job done. This is why I have been so critical of Jones since he annoited Bo the starter last year. I still believe this was an Ego play, Jones wanted his recruit to be a four year starter and break all kinds of records, he believed his own hype, that he is a QB guru and can teach anyone to play....he made no backup options, he won't admit he made a mistake.....We should have had a red shirt senior with proven skills and leadership heading our offense this year...instead our egonmaniac head coach as shot himself (and us) in the foot. Now we are stuck. Gotta stick with Bo as the starter, but need to yank him when he does something stupid, so he will learn there are consequences for his bad decisions. Then, hope we get a JC QB or some other transfer next year and June swallows his pride and admit he made a mistake. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman
