The one point in all this is that they seem to be for the Equestrian Program, not mascots. And I was hoping for Boone and Madeline.

The horseshoe thing never entered their minds when ordering contradictory junk like that - just shows they really don't know what they're doing. And, obviously, nobody cares.
BTW, the basketball drill team got shirts for their little girls dance group a couple of years ago with an UPside down horseshoe - now that shows real intelligence.

You guys missed the most important statement in that "piece"...

"I had made a decision to get more than one horse," she said. "It's like football and having two quarterbacks in case you need a backup. Look what they've done, pulled it off in 100 days, it shows they're excellent trainers."

I think we should hire the trainers to take over as the QB coaches!

Even Madeline knows you need more than one QB!

And then people got after me because I had the nerve to question Orsini's tenure. If someone can show me where he doesn't have his hand in this, then fine. But since Jones is pretty much smiling for every picture here, it would be fair to deduce Orsini is involved.

"Obviously, they don't know what they're doing.''

When have they? The inner workings of our athletic department appears to be the same cluster... that has been going back to the days of Doug Single.

along that line-I got the game about 1 1/2 hours early to beat the traffic and got a good look at the SMU and TCU Cheerleader and Pom Pom squads for about :30 minutes because they all gathered under the stands. TCU has got it all over SMU in that area and it ain't even close. How did that happen? Hope nobody finds out about this -it could ruin our reputation. Sorry if you are a Cheerleader but it had to be said.

Honest question, do you revisit your opinion that June isn't really emotionally invested in his endeavors here? These new Mustangs have June's hand-prints all over it, and he's grumbled about Peruna before. I guess I would argue that he cares enough to rightly or wrongly try and change these things that have absolutely nothing to do with his own product on the field. My visceral opinion is that if he's spending time on this crap, he better be darn certain that his team will be able to achieve seven wins in a single season.

You know he certainly knows where all the money people are who are connected with this school. He loves to rub shoulders with them. I'm Sure he has a lot of them on speed dial to let them know when the checks clear. I'm very suspicious of this -- flash over subtance.

Personally, I'm indifferent about this horse business. We've trashed so many traditions here that I'm numb to it anymore. However, I find it a little strange that he will be allowed to change this tradition when he has no tie to this school and likely will be here for five years and then head back to the island with University Park a distant memory.

If you had Forrest Gregg doing this about 20 years ago when he ran the program, I'd be more on board with it. Of course, Gregg was here before all the traditions started to wither and die.

The man wins the prize..Word has it that JJ wanted to get Peruna out of here because of the "losing culture" surrounding SMU. Remember, he dropped the "Rainbow" in "Rainbow Warriors" at Hawaii. If you look at the "committee" bringing the geldings, notice not one SMU person is a member. Can you say "backdoor?" This squire thing and Turner's instance that Peruna is "still our mascot" is trying to spin so the heat is turned down.

Distract the fans with how badly the team's playing by attempting to replace the school's long-standing mascot. It's a bit Napoleonic to me.

Exactly...I think I saw Barry Switzer's name on the list of people concerned or whatever about the wild horses. Why should Barry's name ever be interpreted with something positive happening for SMU?

Yo, Beav - I'm not talking about changing uniforms or really anything important in the way of tradition (at least not to me). I'm not even talking about getting rid of little Peruna. I have just always wondered (as so many others from schools who consistently give us the beat down) why we have that little cute pony who doesn't resemble a mustang, or even anything close, as our primary mascot. It's not any more "wild" than the horse Pickens gave us. You don't think little Peruna is "broken"? Gee whiz.

I am a big fan of tradition. And especially SMU tradition. But I just never got the cute wittle pony bit. Sorry.

The first SMU football game I can remember attending was in 1944. I ask my aunt who was an SMU student at that time where the mustang was, she then pointed out the little shetland pony . Some years later I was reminded that I ask her when he would grow into a real mustang. It has taken a while but I guess we now have two real mustangs.

Don't know that I'd call them "real" mustangs since they're both broken as well as geldings.

A full sized, horse shoe wearing, broken, gelding, horse that ran wild for half an hour is better than a shetland pony any day of the week!

Period!

Peruna was a mistake that became a tradition.

It's about time we fixed it.

Get over it. The Hawaii natives were upset when JJ stripped them of their Pink, Light Green, Orange and other soft colors. They didn't complain so much when the team bought into a tougher image and the play on the field resembled.

Combine the Hawaii Rainbow colors with our little pony and you get this http://www.flickr.com/photos/gleefulthings/410348507/

If changing mascots is going to change the attitude and culture to one of winning, why don't we just change to Longhorns or Horny Toads, and be done with it?
