Like a previous poster mentioned, I too have heard players over the last 10 years complain about how ridiculous it is to have a DOG serve as our Mustang mascot. Some of you throwing these fits may want to question your criticisms of a perspective that is shared by many current and future SMU players.

Thats B.S., I would venture that those 30 and under alumni, who actually attend games, donate, and root for the program, understand how much Peruna means to the university and tradition...As for the rest of them I don't care because they don't care....

Also, most former players under 30 stink and would have stunk even with Man-o-War taking them out of the tunnel...

B+, that was funny. Was A material, but I took off points for saying former players stunk, even if it's accurate.

OK...the mustangs are going to be a reality come the Navy game. I would like to make one suggestion that may make it at least palatable. The rider(s) should wear a cheerleader uniform. That might help to keep the emphasis on the mustang as apposed to a cowboy or equestrian look.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

The rider must be a hot babe and must do a re-enactment of Lady Godiva after every touchdown.

Well now that is an interesting idea...but alas...it would definitely take the focus away from the mustang. :)

The riders are going to be the horses' trainers for the Navy game because the horses are still very unsettled and it would be dangerous for anybody else to ride them. They will only attend the halftime for the presentation to Turner by the Pickens.

You will not see them again until next year. This is their only appearance for this year as they have to further trained and the decisions made as to how to use them in addition to Peruna. The students will decide on the names later in the school year.

Would it matter if the Mustangs is lost in all of this?

Its amazing how all these guys we never hear from know so much about the detailed plans for the Big Phony Pon(z). I always thought we had great inside contacts but guess not. Someone is talking big time behind the scenes among a select few. Every one of the guys has inside information- I don't remember any of this stuff being released to the public. So come on FESS-UP who exactly is feeding you this information to spread on Ponyfans?

Funny, I've found that the more someone was involved in SMU athletics the less common that attitude is.

Basically this boils down to a bunch of people who aren't real fans complaining because we aren't more like their favorite school UT, or Texas Tech, or whoever.

Hint, hint. after they are introduced as a gift from the Pickinses and Madeline gets her picture with them, then put them out with the Equestrian team and leave them there forever.

This is ridiculous. SMU has one mascot and that is Peruna. Have your ceremony, draw attention to the worthy cause, ask for donations for godsake, and then send these horses back to the ranch they belong on permanently and get out of Peruna's damn way. Wake up Turner and prevent a trainwreck before it happens for once.

Well put. If that "vast majority" really thinks Peruna is a joke, then they fail to understand the tradition of Peruna being the "SYMBOL" of Mustang Spirit. Peruna is cool. Peruna is unique. Don't let Mrs. Gotrocks pull a fast one. She only cares about the wild horse foundation or whatever - which is great - it should be supported - it is worthwhile. But she doesn't care about SMU - don't let her use us - at the expense of a long standing tradition.

This why I suggested that the horses be named "Ben" and "Dover."

Good point. Continue ignoring the fans 30 and under and this program should really take off. Continue with game presentations that appeal to a 75+ demographic because they're the true die-hard fans. The product on the field is paramount to building a fan base, but it doesn't hurt update traditions to infuse a bit of life into the program. Do you think recruits are impressed by Peruna barking across the field or the sometimes maddening M band interludes that suck the life out of the crowd? I don't get why, to the detriment of the program, we can't upgrade these elements because they're "tradition".

I go to ALL of the games, as do my friends. We support SMU in the community and contribute a lot of money to the school. Yet somehow, all of us understand that our school's heritage does not rest on the future of Peruna. A lot of younger people DO care despite never having a worthy team to cheer for in their lifetime. In what other forum does 30 consecutive years of losing not necessitate a few changes? I'm sorry if this decision makes the alumni of '59's experience seem a little more distant.

Does anyone realize UT's original mascot was a Pig? Oklahoma State's mascot was a tiger (hence orange and black). College football is littered with mascot changes, name changes and even color changes. Get over it.
