As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughPatton-like rant follows:
I'm convinced after going to school at SMU within the last decade and now seeing the actions of a significant portion of the SMU student body that most of them just don't get it - putting out articles like this in the school paper is EXACTLY why we have the reputation we do: http://media.www.smudailycampus.com/med ... 3761.shtml Drop the "we have money so we're better than you" act, stop equating everything to how rich your parents are, stop showing up to games in plaid jackets and alligator shoes (yes, there was someone dressed like this in the SMU section last Saturday at Amon Carter), and just get out and support your school and your team. And if you don't want to grow up or think you don't have to, then shut up and at the very least don't print garbage like this for the whole world to see. Three different people sent me this story today, and aside from sheepishly laughing it off, I don't really know what to say.
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughAside from it being the normal armature writing for a student newspaper, I didn't see anything wrong with the article. You act like this image is something that needs to change, and while I can appreciate your opinion, I also disagree with it. We're SMU, the spoiled brats of the Texas Elite. What are we? 97% Greek, and we have freakin Hummer demos on the Blvd. before Games. This is nothing new (well, OK, the Hummers are). This is not something that needs to be changed.
I would guess that the fact that folks wouldn't at least wear SMU gear is a reflection of new fans not knowing what to expect from a Rival field. That's a good sign. They weren't there three years ago, but they were this year. So, wear a damn Red or Blue polo and call it good my young friends. And start coming to the home games too. That's all I ask for. But don't be ashamed of where we come from and who we are. -CoS
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughIt appears to be written in a satiric manner. If fellow SMU alums/fans sent you this then they know that. If people that didn't go to SMU sent you this tell them to get a life and stop reading college newspapers.
Here is my rant: Everyone [deleted] about student support. Then, they make sure to [deleted] about the way in which those few students that do support go about being a fan. Get off your high horse (or gelding) and appreciate those students that are trying to do their part. Maybe if SMU ever climbs out of D.F.L. in either revenue sport then more students will try to appease you and fit into the mold of your idea of a "fan". Side note- is a plaid jacket and alligator shoes any more absurd than going shirtless with paint on your body and face and some sort of absurd headwear (like a cheesehead for instance)? I just want fans of SMU athletics at the games. It'd be great if everyone wore SMU colors but first and foremost I want butts in the seats.
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enough
Must have been typing my response as you wrote this. I agree. For the record, I think it is approx 60% of the freshman class that rushes annually. Of course people from older classes rush as well, and some people dropout or transfer- but its safe to say that over half of the campus is Greek, I would guess. (I realize your 97% overestimate was for effect just wanted to float an estimate of the actual percentage out there) Hey 03 Mustang? Do my posts in this thread fall in line with your expectation of what a ponyfans poster should do? Feedback appreciated. ![]()
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughSorry if you disagree, but I just don't think the satire works well at all in the article - it just comes off as arrogant, period.

That's us! -CoS
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughThis is the sort of "fan" we should be more concerned about in my opinion. Not the ones that travel to away games to cheer the team on, even if it is deemed as being done in an arrogant and elitist way.
Speaking in regards to the upcoming game vs Navy....
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughI take back that post about SMU21TCU10 if he or she does not actually live in Dallas. Don't mean to pick on one person, justgiving an example.
And if I only went to games I thought we could win since I was a frosh at SMU who knows how few games I would have been to. Sheesh!
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enough
I will agree there, without a doubt (even though I know you retracted that on the next post). I'm just sick of arrogance and elitism being the image of our school rather than a strong educational institution and solid athletics. It just infuriates me when people happily embrace that image over ideals people actually respect.
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughIf we are going to go down the arrogant snob route, we should at least do it up as a parody. That would be a great gimmick.
The fact that people doing it are serious is just embarassing. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughThe responses were a bit over the top.
CBC posted 10/06/09 @ 10:10 AM CST Manors? I'm sorry that the only 'manor' you visited had shag carpet and faulty locks... We actually have Hotels if you would rather stay there instead of a Motel next time. Appreciate the jaded compliments, but sad that all of that money and affluence was never used for grammar lessons. Articles like this remind me that my 40-minute move from Dallas to FW was a very wise decision. All the best, Cowboy Bill Horned Frogs posted 10/06/09 @ 12:19 PM CST First, it's 'manners' not manors', sorry if spending too many nights in our "slums" made you forget how to spell. Second, we're sorry that Mustangs don't have the school spirit that Horned Frogs do, I guess it's the #10 national ranking that does it for us. I do know that on my trip to SMU last year, after I was accosted by a drunken member of one of your classier sororities. (Are any of them?) And that as Horned Frogs, we brought the purple in force and were proud to do it. Finally, if you're as "country club" as you attest to, and are used to not "slumming" it, why did you pick the cheap [deleted] motels to stay in and eat only at McDonalds? Pony Down, Mustangs. Here's to being snotty, hypocritical [deleted] that would rather knock back Miller High Life in our expensive cars whilst wearing Ralph Lauren chic attire than actually cheer and be proud of our football team. jdennie posted 10/06/09 @ 2:38 PM CST Are you kidding me? You are a pretentious little Shetland pony of a writer. Your supposed tip of the Stetson was actually a veiled insult and I for one must speak out. I'm so glad I received my undergraduate degree from The Schieffer School of Journalism where TCU students learn how to distinguish the difference between homophones such as manner and manor. It's apparent that football isn't the only area where TCU outperforms SMU. Okay . . .okay . . . stop crying. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. It's a good thing that you made this mistake here and not when you're out in the world on your first real writing assignment. Be more careful next time. Check and recheck your copy. Don't rely on spell check. Better luck next time – on the field and in the press room. Sorry I was so harsh. LOL "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Ho Ho Hey Hey, You'll be working for me someday! I'm bringing it back (Obviously this is the funny version).
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughThe girl who wrote that was sober for about 15 minutes of her trip...I hope she took good notes?
We've never lost the tailgate.
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enoughIf you live in Dallas and you go to Fort Worth for a game, why are you booking a hotel room?
Don't drive drunk, have a DD take you back to Dallas.
Re: As if leaving early (or not showing up) wasn't bad enough
