Wisdom from the mouth of mrydel. Somebody asserted on here that only old people care about Peruna, and everybody else wants a big horsey to feel better about themselves. I am 41. I do not feel old, at least in my head. But I think it is depressing that our traditions are being [deleted] on, by our own school, while it is clear that whatever we say about this will have no effect. THIS IS A FIRM SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE 1,500--THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE STUCK WITH SMU ATHLETICS THROUGHOUT THIS 20-YEAR CRAP, PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL TRADITION, PEOPLE WHO...oh, [deleted] me with a cedar stump, there is nothing to be done, Peruna will soon be gone, we will be a national laughing stock for changing our mascot instead of our team, and I would not be surprised in the not too distant future to see our players wearing arena league style uniforms, because "they voted on it."
The athletic dept took a calculated risk here. They are banking on the idea that when we start winning, the anger about the disrespect towards and disposal of the 77-yr tradition will wear off. It will not for me. Ever.

All good points, great post...I think we will win out and this idea will go the way....but remember we have to make it happen...we support the university..I wrote a letter explaining why I would no longer be donating to the Mustang Club or renewing Season Tickets until this nonsense is ended....Hit them in the wallet..thats the only language they seem to understand....Does not make me less of a fan, I will still go to the games, I will just buy a 10 dollar ticket and go sit in my old seats or maybe some that are better......

I have supported SMU athletics for over 45 years both financially and with my volunteer time. I have no connection with the athletic department other than as a fan. I respectfully disagree with Mrydel and the others who so fervently believe the donation of true Mustangs by a charitable foundation dedicated to the protection of wild horses is a slap in the face to SMU tradition. I see this donation in the long run as bringing positive exposure to SMU as well as giving needed publicity to the plight of wild horses in Texas and the West. I agree with Bus that there is room for both Purena and the donated Mustangs in the future of SMU. This appears to be a done deal. I would hope we can all move on without all the personal attacks on each other. Our athletic program needs our support both financially and through our attendance at games.

FYI - It is not one horse..There are two horses.they are not Mustangs as they have been broken...They are going to have a rider. They are guildings. Peruna is a stallion. Putting him in the same area as the other horses is asking for trouble.

Why should people support an organization or idea that trashes what those people believe in? JJ believes that Peruna is a part of a losing culture and wants to jettison it.

Can you please make a song to defend your points? People love the songs and would probably actually learn something about why dumping on every remaining tradition isn't a good idea.

If it has not already been done in another thread, someone please post the wire service story out today about how the Department of the Interior is moving about 70,000 wild mustangs and burros to a smaller tract of protected land so they do not have to start killing them due to the high cost of upkeep. If people with their "worthy causes" would just let the animals live their lives as God intended, they would be ok. But we have to get bored wealthy people, the government, AND SPANIARDS, involved and now the beautiful animals are being broken and/or killed. I see no good philathropic cause here other than trying to brainwash the Dallas community into believing we are a rough and tough football team before we have done anything that would justify that belief.

Unfortunately they are not living as God intended, they were dumped here by the Spaniards and left to fend for themselves.

Obama should round them all up for processing and ship the meat to China and France. It would probably put a big boost in the economy.

I would be interested in hearing how many people really believe the "we will keep Peruna" line. I am sure they will fir now, but when this Peruna passes on, what will be the reason for bringing in another? Tradition? That is already being thrown aside.

As a side note to BUS, Mustangbill67, and other big horse backers, I still love ya but I do heartily disagree with your stances.

mrydel - i have always respected your views as well as your humor - for some reason many of us on this chat page believe that we are going to do away with our beloved mascot Peruna - why and how this started is a mystery to me -

last night at an SMU function i had the opportunity to discuss this with President Turner - he specificly told me he had no idea how this started - he said we are NOT replacing Peruna - he said that he and the administration have NO plans to do away with Peruna now or in the future - he said as far as he is concerned Peruna will be ALWAYS be our mascot - he also said contrary to other rumors we are NOT doing away with the band -

Hopefully this will ease your doubts :D

Don't Care. We don't want 3 mascots. We have a mascot Peruna. Now if Turner promises the Big Phony Ponyz will never again appear in Ford Stadium I think we got a compromise.

I'm good with that....come out and say this is a one time thing to raise awareness for a worthy cause and then I can live with it....you need to start the spin control now though, quit letting it fester.

Can you please elaborate on the part where Turner said he "had no idea how this started."
