Skip was offered SMU job

Postby Dooby » Thu Oct 08, 2009 3:22 pm

I was reminded of this today.

Skip was offered the SMU job, according to his dad, Lou, in his last book. SMU offered Skip the HC job that eventually went to Bennett. Skip turned it down because he was promised the South Carolina job after Lou retired.

"After the 2002 season, Skip was offered a lucrative head-coaching position at a fine school (SMU). He declined it after consulting with Dr. (McGee)," Lou Holtz wrote. "He was assured that he had a future at South Carolina after I left. That proved to be erroneous."

Please note that at a minimum, Lou has his dates wrong. SMU had a vacancy after the 2001 season.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I had heard that Daddy told him not to take it. I thought it was becasue we sucked but perhaps it was actually the SC deal that did not come about.

Too bad Skip's not the Dad and Lou's not the son. South Carolina could have gone from Skip to my Lou...

Thank you, I'm here all weekend!

Sadly, I think Lou is the son now. His dabblings about ND are incoherrent.

Mike McGee (then AD at SC) did tell Lou Holtz he could pass the reigns to Skip when he was ready to retire...and that promise was still alive when the SMU gig opened up...but the next season, SC did a nose dive, McGee decided to announce his retirement and Skip realized all bets were off, so he moved on to ECU. At least that's the way it was all reported over here in SC

I'm sure we were interested in Holtz, but I don't think he ever had any real interest in us...more because of timing and the chance to succeed Lou at SC than anything else in that time frame.
