If any of you supporters of this letter can provide anything besides assumptions/conspiracy theory that provide one single fact proving that Peruna is going to be replaced please come forward with it. Where has anyone in a decision making capacity at SMU stated there are any plans to replace Peruna?

An assistant coach with JJ specifically told me that "they needed to get rid of the little horse because of the losing culture associated with it." I don't think he came up with the idea on his own. He is spouting JJ' info.

Your argument misses the point. Any other animal out there DIMINISHES Peruna's role.

It would be like adding flags and rifles to the Band...It changes what the entity is.

Oh baloney. What SMU coach told you they are "getting rid of Peruna"? Quit lying to try and bolster your point. No one, not a single official at SMU has said a single word about "getting rid of Peruna".

Karl here ... Maybe there's no real plan to replace Peruna, but I still think it's good to say "Don't even THINK about it." People will do just about anything for money -- if others don't hold them accountable ... I'm glad (most of) you like what I wrote ... If you feel strongly about it, please post a comment on my letter at the DC website ...

I'll be waiting for the prez to issue a statement in this regard.

They have already said Wildfire will be leading the team on the field. As far as I am concerned, Peruna has already been retired.

It's not the gift from the Pickens' that troubles me, it is the stated intentions of our coach with respect to that gift. June Jones has specifically said he does not want the team to run out behind Peruna, that he thinks they need to jettison symbols of a losing culture (which is stupid, because Peruna is a symbol of a winning culture that predated the death penaly, Phil Bennett, June Jones, and Bo Levi). So, yeah, Peruna is not going anywhere -- and that's precisely the point. When they keep Peruna on the sidelines as a token while the other horse "replaces" Peruna, then Peruna will be effectively replaced.

My letter to June Jones and Steve Orsini was discourage that attitude. It's not the size of the mascot that is a symbol of a losing culture, it is the failure to learn, embrace, participate in and defend our traditions that is the biggest symbol of our losing culture. (That, and an annointed QB who sets interception records).

So start winning, and then all our symbols will be symbols of a winning culture. P.S. I don't give a hoot in hell what you think about our traditions, coach. You just got here.

I copied this from another thread that got buried. I think all of the 30 and under folks need to read and learn:

You want to know about tradition? Read John Feinstein's book about the Army-Navy Game Civil War. Maybe some of you knuckleheads will catch on.

Just consider this. After every Army-Navy game, the players for each team stand in unison on the field and respectfully listen to each program's alma mater. I know several of you just learned that.

So let's say, the schools decided to call it off because some political group thought it was offensive to those who died in what they term an illegal war, and the administration at both academies caved in, how do you think that would be received? There would be absolute revolt.

Staying with Army -- Navy. What if Army decided to add a Mustang to join its Mule or Navy added a lamb to join its goat? How do you think the alums and student bodies would react to it? Again, there would be absolute revolt.

Some of you identify tradition of going out partying at the local bar every Thursday night because that's about all tradition means to you.

SMU is serving as a big prostitute for this whole sham.

well, I said for him, but by extension if it works out for him, it will work out for us is what i was thinking. On second thought, I guess he's got his 10mil no matter what.

Ya know maybe that idea of June coming here to collect the check and run back to island is starting to catch more people's attention.

I just wonder if he really cares how his 5 year run turns out here. I have so many misgivings about his true intentions being on our campus.

How about Navy vs. Notre Dame? Both teams SING both school's alma maters at the conclusion of that annual matchup as well.

The whole slap at tradition is even more absurd in that we are rolling this out against Navy. Did their GOAT prevent them from feeling tough and kicking our asses all over the yard last year? Oh I forgot, it was windy that day so the run and shoot can't be expected to be effective on such days. Like others have pointed out, Navy is perhaps the most tradition laden institution in college football. And because they can draw a crowd no matter what because they WIN AND they honor tradition, we choose this game to roll out our new tradition so that there will be someone in the stands to see it and make mrs. pickens feel good. F off SMU. I'm serious, this is disgusting.

Patton, I don't agree, I think JJ has every intention of winning here. The caveat is he only intends to do it absolutely 100% HIS way, with his true freshman quarterback, with his mascot and with his offense come hell or high water. Would rather lose than compromise is the way it looks, ala Wash State. And I think based on his age and lifestyle, this is no more than a 5 year gig for him no matter what. So what we do with the Chuck and Duck offense in 5 years who knows, go on a 10 year rebuilding plan probably.
