Well, Peruna, thanks for stopping by!

Unfortunately you are contributing to the losing athletic culture here at SMU and head football coach June Jones has put you in his cross hairs to eliminate.

So thanks for the 8+ decades of service you gave us: From representing us at the 1935 Rose Bowl, to representing us when Jerry L. broke the color barrier in the SWC in the 1960s to many good and tough seasons along the way including the Pony Express of the early 1980s.

We loved it when you were run across the field after touchdowns and quarters. You were feisty but that made you all the more lovable. Your handlers knew what the deal was.

You see, it's really all your fault we've had two seasons of non-losing football here on the Hilltop since our return from the death penalty in 1989. And here all this time we thought is was the morbid culture to impossible academic restrictions to just really bad coaching and bad players.

Our mistake. But you have to pay for those sins now.

You have 4 final home games left before you are led away for good to an unknown destination. It looks like when your time comes, you will not be able to be buried next to your predecessors. Guess the head coach who is only here to steal his money and bolt back to island doesn't want that to happen either. So you're pretty much out of luck. Wish we could help you.

The other problem you had is that the current SMU folks that run the place are only interested in sticking their hands out. But you've shown tremendous strength and maturity over this time of embattlement.

For us marginalized and half-crazed over 30 somethings, we'll always have your back. It's just the money grubbers and the me-first under 30 crowd could give a hoot and hell because they don't acknowledge tradition because they just don't care about it.

Please know that you'll always have a special place with us. To us, you are SMU -- AT LEAST THE SMU WE USED TO KNOW!

Be well, my friend. Be well.

This is my letter today to Orsini, Turner, and June Jones. You've heard almost all of it before, but they haven't. I urge others to do the same

Gentlemen,

I probably have half your email addresses wrong, but my name is Spence White, and I am an SMU grad, and a Knucklehead. My buddy and I have done silly youtube videos for SMU athletics in the past, of which I know you have seen at least one. I thank you for putting up with our foolishness. I love, live and breathe SMU. I like the direction the football program is headed. But I want to talk to you about something.

We have a mascot already, named Peruna. Peruna was here 57 years before SMU football sucked. Peruna was here when Doak Walker and Kyle Rote's mom's were wiping their respective hind ends. Eric Dickerson and Craig James and Don Meredith and Jerry Levias and Forrest Gregg and Raymond Berry were all proud to be called PONIES (it did not make them feel WIMPY) with Peruna leading them. They took care of their self esteem stuff on the field.

I have heard that Coach Jones feels we need to get rid of Peruna, because "Peruna is a symbol of the losing culture of SMU football." Coach, you could not be more WRONG. It is nobody's fault but SMU's fault. And so far, at 3-13, it's still YOUR fault, frankly. If our players feel EMASCULATED running behind our mascot to the point that they can't compete, then YOU NEED TO GO GET SOME NEW PLAYERS. Destroying a 77-year college football tradition to distract from the fact our team is sucks is deplorable. My god, no other school would do that, only SMU. Yes, I know, "Peruna is not going away...blah blah" What a freaking joke that is. We all know that is BS, if Madeline Pickens' pet is leading the team on the field, Peruna has been replaced as far as I'm concerned. When are we going to get the news that we're using arena league-style uniforms because the "players voted on it??"

I know that this has been a calculated risk. The athletic dept. is banking on the idea that if/whenever we start winning, the anger about the disrespect towards and disposal of a 77-year SMU tradition for no reason will wear off. It will not for me. Ever. I can promise you that.

An Okie State alum writes us a check, so they get to dictate what our mascot is... Wow. This truly disgusts me. CHANGE THE FOOTBALL TEAM, NOT THE MASCOT. What the hell is wrong with you people

Go Oklahoma State!!

Spence White ('90)
(Knucklehead)

PS if there is no check involved from TBoone, it disgusts me even more.

Knucklestang. You have the power to do some damage here. if you sumed up what you just wrote into a few Lyrics and threw it up on YouTube - it WILL go viral and you will see a lot more awareness about this. Most alums not on this borad have no idea about this...

A friend of mine, non-SMU affiliated, asked me about the Pickens Plan and remarked, "Pickens must have made a big donation to SMU for this." I replied that there has been no comment about money changing hands. He was flabbergasted.

Maybe we said to Pickens "where da $" and Pickens said "well tell your peeps to quick [deleted] and then maybe we'll talk about it"
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
