Hell, if he'd get us to a bowl, as far as I'm concerned he could call us the Rainbow Ponies.

Good one jtstang. I think that would be a consensus among most Mustang fans. Winning will silence the critics.

Actually, winning will not silence me. This crap has not a thing to do with winning.

Varsity Slop should be embarrassed for repeating verbatim the athletic department talking points. Winning or no winning - Peruna is the ONLY mascot on our campus. That's it.

I dedicate this to Varsity Shop because...you're just a gigolo and everybody knows the (two bit) part you're playing. Without Jones and Orsini, "you ain't got nobody." Enjoy!

Or someone changed it for him. Me thinks that Varsity Shop is Orsini's and Jones' personal gelding.

Well, for many little girls, Shetlands are associated with My Little Pony...There are still other breeds of miniature horses and I thought it may be one of those i.e. a Pony of the Americas, Hackney or Welsh, althought the last two were somewhat unlikely. I do have respect for tradition but I also have respect for change, change can be good...However, like many suggest, the only thing that I think we should be concerned about is wins. As far as I am concerned, yes, we could be the rainbow ponies and if we go to a bowl, that'd float my boat just fine. Why can't we just have both? Even though those two horses look like they'd eat Peruna, the team enjoyed seeing them on the field during practice last week and I think it'd be a nice addition. But I guess nice addition just doesn't cut it.

Yes absolutely, have you not ever changed your mind about anything? Plus what choice do I have? Sit around and moan about the weather or grab an umbrella an move on. I think Director Orsini lays out the facts quite well and thus I am going to rally around this football program that is obviously making progress under his direction.

Okay I get the resignation thing, we can't do anything about it and I said as much earlier in this thread. But anyone who thinks changing the mascot is indicative of the football program "making progress" or will "help the boys win" and therefore should be "rallied around" is just foolish.

Having returned from the 100 degree heat of Orlando Florida, I must say that Orsini's letter raises as many questions as it answers. It says positively that "Peruna is our mascot." It then goes on to say that "participation of the new horses has not been determined". That of course means there will be future participation by them in game day actiivites, he's just not telling us.

To Southern Comfort, these horses may have once been "mustangs", but they are no longer "mustangs". Let's be clear- a mustang is defined as generally, "Many mustangs are descendants of sixteenth-century Spanish explorers' imported horses that had escaped and adapted to wilderness conditions. Modern feral horses represent hybrids of numerous breeds and primarily live in western states. Books and movies usually depict mustangs sentimentally as symbols of freedom." A domesticated horse which is castrated to calm it down is not a feral horse and certainly not a symbol of freedom. It is like taking a guy out of the wilds of Africa, putting chains around him and parading him around as an African chieftan. He might once have been a chieftan, now he's just a slave. These two new geldings, may have once been mustangs, but now they are just plain horses. Sorry.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I believe you are being disingenuous. Once a Mustang always a Mustang. This topic has been discussed ad nauseam on other threads and I will not belabor mine and other's views. We need to move on and devote our energies to supporting this team and the other Mustang athletic teams.

I disagree, tradition is all that seperates a school with a legit past, like SMU, UT, A&M, etc., from the upstarts with no history, like UL-Monroe or UNT.

We should support our teams, but we should NEVER EVER drop this issue.

If anything, based on the number of traditions dropped, added, and changed in the last 20 years, NOT EMBRACING TRADITION is part of the losing culture of SMU, not the traditions we have left.

really aggravates me when people say we just need to move on. With the cryptic press release from Orsini yesterday, it is not time to move on. SMU makes this veiled announcement what a week and half ago, still hasn't clarified a damn thing yet people are just supposed to lay down and accept this without question? Perhaps SMU Gelding fans are the ones who have been castrated and no longer know how to stand up for anything that matters. I also don't understand those that are so afraid of dissent and differing opinions who constantly plead for other people to move on which is really a euphanism for not wanting to be disagreed with or not being able to win the debate on the merits.

The whole thing is just such bad form by SMU its really unbelievable.
