I'd like to see what a lineup of McCoy, Williams/Clinkscales, Haynes, Faye and Dia could do. Seems like either Williams or clinkscales will be the scoring spark off the bench as the 6th man, and Otis would be your rebounding/defensive spark as the 7th man. Key to me is actually Haynes. I think we need his size and athleticism at the 3. If he has a breakout year, this team could be much better than last year and it needs to be much better.

forgot about Nyakundi. Love the way he shoots it, but not sure where he fits. Seems too stiff to play the 3 and not physical enough to play the 4.

Good take and about the way I see it. I think our biggest issue is the glut of the same types of player, all who happen to be some of our best. For example, McCoy/Williams/Clinkscales/Walker are all lead guard/combo's. McCoy may be a true point, but we don't know that yet. Haynes & Harp are the only true SGs on the team, and Harp had his chance. The need to get both McCoy & Williams on the court leaves us small in the backcourt, so I think we should play to that. As you suggested, start Haynes at the 3, our best combination of size, shooter, quicks, boards and bounce.

Nyakundi & Faye are classic tweeners. Start Faye at the 4, see if he can defend worth a lick, or provide some glass presence. If not, role w/Nyakundi and spread them out. Basically, Doh could stand to watch some Villanova and look at the 4 out, 1 in.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

I like Haynes to be a big key to success as well...he showed some good flashes towards the end of the year...nice shooting touch and the long arms and slasher moves we desparately need.

I still have faith Nyakundi..I expect him to have improved in the off season and come back much better...He was already one of the best long range shooters I have seen at SMU in quite a while and I expect there was great emphasis in improving the rest of his basketball skills....Don't want to compare his transformation like Doherty did with Killen and Ike before..but that does give me hope..

I still remember Doherty stating how good Ike and Killen would become....He has said that Haynes will be 1st team all conference before he leaves SMU and Nyakundi is one of the best shooters he has ever seen. I am going to think he knows what he is talking about here and look forward to seeing how they have progressed over the off season.

Does anyone worry about the fact that Clinkscales is a horrible basketball name?

Can we change his name to Swishscales?

Eleven (11) wins max as the pieces are not there. I expect nothing from the center position, no "go to" scorer and a shooting guard who can actually shoot remains to be seen.

You will be proven wrong on that. There is quite a bit of talent on this team and they will have a strong season.

It depends how Doh uses this team. A smaller line-up is not necessarily bad, if they press intensely throughout the game and he rotates players in and out. Dia will then only have to rebound, block shots, set picks and throw outlet passes. I think the quickness is there to pull that off and pressing with rotation will give all the guys floor time and reduce griping. In fact if they're pressing, they'll want to come out now and then. Offensively, pressing would allow for some transition buckets. We don't have consistency needed for 3 bombing strategy and we don't have the size to bang it inside. So, up tempo may be what's needed this year.

From Doh's tweet:

Great practice! Mo Faye has been especially good! Proud of our concentration and effort!

I am not convinced that there is "quite a bit of talent". Center position will contribute little at best, very little toughness and physical play plus marginal shooting from the forward positions, nice guard depth and play with no proven #2 shooter. Record will require beating up on every pre-season cupcake and overcoming Doh's inconsistent substitution patterns and game coaching. Hopefully, his new assistants will have some influence and impact. I stick with eleven (11) wins; however, would be pleased with a lot more.
