The letter is a press release, pure and simple. The history lesson about the origin of Mustangs as SMU's mascot, the data about the wild horse foundation - it's just filler and misdirection. They're trying to spin this as any argument against the addition of full-size horses must mean you're also against the noble rescue of mustangs.

Orsini is walking a tightrope here. He knows the fan base is in an uproar, but he needs access to the Boone billions. The full-size horses will have some role to keep Mrs. Pickens happy. Peruna will remain, but how much will his role be reduced?

As for southern comfort and others like him, if you think Peruna is such a tiny, meek mascot, spend some time around him. Talk to his handlers. If you think the full-size horses could "eat" Peruna, you are completely clueless about the strength and fight in the smaller horses. This isn't really your fault - it's SMU's fault for not promoting its own traditions and making a bigger deal out of Peruna.

And I love southern comfort's argument that if the next coach doesn't like the new horses, he can get rid of them. LOL! That's why they're called TRADITIONS - because they don't change from year to year, coach to coach. Really, southern comfort, that's just classic!

I don't think most SMU fans are afraid of change. But change has to be for the right reasons. Although an ill-informed minority doesn't think Peruna is macho enough for them (Do Notre Dame fans cry out for a "full-size" leprechaun?) Peruna is one of the things SMU has always gotten right. There was no significant outcry to replace him or reduce his role. In fact, the outcry has been just the opposite since this announcement was made.

And as for our esteemed coach, if he wants to look at the rear of a large equine when his team runs onto the field, may I humbly suggest a mirror?

Oh so now we have a Mascot that SUCKS!!!!! [deleted] [deleted] [deleted]

Why are you always cutting down SMU traditions. Why are willing to destroy an 80 year SMU tradition. You and the .20% trying to tear down SMU traditions are always bitchin' about the things the way they are and want things different.

Loyalty is to a university not a transient Coach or AD. Why are you disloyal to the History and Traditions of the University.

Last time I checked this was a message board where opinions of Mustang faithful are placed. Letters have been sent to Orsini and the response was apparently the Memo that started this thread. Others have been from his minions applauding the wonderful letter he wrote. Sure they have the right to change the mascot and we have the right as fans, alumni, Mustang Club members, donors, etc., to say what we think. And if they wish to disregard what vast majority of these folks think, in order to whore themselves out to the Pickens Billions (without so far as I know any financial commitment to the University), then that is of course their choice. But usually the whore wants the money in advance, instead we got two geldings to feed with no real idea what to do with them and with no familial commitment to even replace them when they go to the glue factory in the sky.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Bump. :)

As you can see, not all these threads got moved. I had to go back to page 2 to find this one, because some of these were no longer being active and just drifted away.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
