Amen Brother Treadway. And most of those that are crying, "Gee Golly, why are you so worried about Peruna and the new swell horses...." haven't put up with double speak over the past 25 years like many of us have from the various administrations. I want to give Orsini and others the benefit of the doubt but the letter was VAGUE as Stallion and others have pointed out and another potential PR fiasco. I hope Ponyte is right and it will all be worked out without killing off more tradition. If a recruit is run off by something someone says on this board...well, bless his pointed little head.

Personally I think Thad's points on the other thread are well taken and I would be more concerned about running off the Pickens family. It is possible to disagree with class. And dont give me the crap about "who cares if they're not SMU." Aside from Texas Tech day, opening day, Baylor Baptist night and TCU day, the "tradition" at Ford has been empty seats in the endzone. Look this year and they're filled with DISD kids. I'll take them all day long, whether they ever set foot on the Hilltop again or not.
How many times have we pined for celebrities to be on our sidelines? We'd always come up with our best SMU alumni guesses, and always got the usual suspects. Well, JJ's here, he wants the same thing, and while a lot of who we mentioned as possibilities aren't there...guess what? We've had BIGGER celebrity presence from people not even SMU related. Staubach..Gene Jones...now the Pickens family...Thad mentioned Deion...The most recent former President...and I'm sure I am forgetting many.

Staubach, Meredith and others were at the Navy game in '02. These overtures have been made in the past. Nothing real new.
Bob Hope used to hang with us in the 60s and 70s.
Some are acting like, 'OMG, these fancy people are noticing us! This has never happened to l'il ol' SMU!'
We don't have to change mascots to attract celebrities. (and, no, I'm not certain Peruna is safe for the long term.)
Don't misunderstand. I'm all for class too. Accept the gift graciously, then open a riding stables for disadvantaged kids. Hell, put it on the main quad.

I don't believe I mentioned Deion. That was Ralph. And I think with the Dez Bryant situation at T. Boone's alma mater we might want to be careful about Primetime Neon Deion Sanderclause. I kid,I actually think Dez should have said, "yeah, I worked out with Deion and if that was a violation I can honestly say I wasn't aware of it." Anyway, thanks for backing me up RGV. In my interview with Reggie Dupard for the film he said talking about years past, "how can you not recruit when you've got DALLAS?" I think Jones is taking this to the next level, not just bringing players to Dallas and cultivating the local talent, but bringing Dallas to SMU. That goes from inner-city kids bussed in to big named and wealthy celebs in our corner.

we've been bussing in inner city kids since Ford Stadium opened. lets not suggest this is some revelation or new committment to being connected with Dallas.

Agreed. Was just trying to be broad with my language.

Just like Thad to change the subject to broads.

Unfortunately this horse talk has basically taken over the discussions of our football section right in the middle of the SMU Mustangs best football season in years. It is really a shame to allow so much "horse chatter" to hijack this special period in SMU football history. This is really embarrassing to think fans from our opponents come over and see this trainwreck of a football discussion board hijacked by non-stop horse talk. Fellows lets talk football in the football section and SMU Mascots in "Around the Hilltop".
Hey go over to the basketball forum..there is no talk of Peruna there................

Thad makes the point about being concerned about running off the Pickins Millions. If there is a check involved with these ponies great, tell us what a great amount of money they are giving, name the Equestrian Program after them or some building on campus and be done with it. What would the Perkins School of Theology do if Pat Robertson showed up with a big check and said, we want you to start a Faith Healing Department and have Oral Roberts III, as the professor? What would the business department do if Bernie Madoff came calling with a big check (from his Swiss account) to fund a class on how to swindle people out of billions of dollars? The point here is that like it or not, Peruna is part of the heart and soul of SMU football. Through good times and bad, Peruna has run the field leading our teams. What is our heart and soul worth? And if so, what should be price be? There may be some who are willing to sell their collective souls for a few million to the University. If so, that's their choice, but at least have the decency to tell us up front that's what you're doing.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Please continue to have the horse flesh controversy on the football thread. If it is moved, I doubt there will be the volume of discussion and free flow of ideas. And that would equal less visitors and hits to the site.
The bottom line is horse flesh talk is good for the traffic of the site and that is good for business.
