Robert Mojica - scholarship?

Postby Alaric » Thu Oct 15, 2009 10:11 am

Is he expected to be placed on scholarship? He's a pretty good athlete and appears to have a good head for the game but he's small...great guy to keep on the roster as a walk-on.

I'd love to save the scholarship but they're often promised with a certain level of performance.

Having just paid for a SMU education for my son .....I can assure you the Mojica's would be very appreciative of the ride....if he earns it he more than deserves the help.....thats what walk-ons live for and it also serves to motivate and possibly encourage those who may come after him as well...

He has been a solid player for us this season. I'd say if he continues that throughout the year then yes he deserves the 'ship.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I agree. Base the decision on overall performance over the course of the entire season.

JJ ran an *excellent* walk-on program at Hawaii, with numerous starters each year that joined the program as walk-ons. One key part of the program is that the coaches could tell players that those who earned their spots in the rotation would get scholarships, and they could give dozens of examples of players that were awarded scholarships. Several Hawaii walk-ons have gone on to the NFL, including Colt Brennan and Rich Miano (who JJ put in charge of the walk-on program at Hawaii).

If the team does not award scholarships to those who have earned a lot of playing time, the walk-on program will run dry of players...especially at an expensive school like SMU. The only other requirement is that JJ required a certain GPA for a walk-on to get a scholarship, after he got burned by the APR. Walk-ons who don't graduate do not hurt the APR, but scholarship players do.

If a player earns his spot, he can get a scholarship and not count towards that 25 initial limit. If a player walks on and doesn't earn his spot, he'll transfer out or quit the team and not hurt the APR. That is a great deal for a football program! It also gives an overlooked player a chance to earn a scholarship.

I really don't think we have any open scholarships to give.

Coach Jones has a history of rewarding those walk-ons who reach (or maybe exceed) expectations with a scholarship. Under that criteria, Mojica deserves one. Hope he gets it.
And I hope he keeps playing his tail off.

I think he should get one if he projects to a 2nd team player that will see the field with a healthy roster in the future

Hawaii had so many walk-ons under JJ that at times the cutoff to get a scholarship was to be a starter *before* being awarded a scholarship. Other times a player would fit the criterion you said to be awarded a scholarship. One year a player was a starter for an entire season but couldn't get a scholarship until the next year because Hawaii was out of scholarships...

Walk-ons generally get awarded a scholarship in the summer or shortly before Fall camp opens, sometimes it happens during Fall camp.

Hawaii's starting QB is a walk-on who will continue to need to deliver pizzas throughout the season--hopefully they can get him a scholarship by the summer.

that's what I'm saying really. He is not really a starter. Not really a big part of the team. He is situation starting for SMU right now. Quite frankly if they don't think he is going to be a guy that contribute to the team consistently in the future then he probably shouldn't be a scholarship player. That's June Jones' call. But just because a guy gets on the field-makes a few plays in a rebuilding program-I don't think earns a scholarship. SMU has about 8 sholarship Sophomores who hit the field last year that I'm not sure are ever going to start in this program. They hit the field because SMU is rebuilding-many didn't "earn anything. Still plenty of time to prove himself
