Oct. 14, 2009
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU women's basketball forward Brittany Gilliam has been named to the Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference USA team, the league announced Wednesday. Gilliam is coming off an impressive 2009 campaign in which she was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.
Gilliam and the Mustangs have been one of the final four teams in the last two C-USA Championships, with SMU winning the tournament title in 2008 and regular season crown in 2009. The Tyler, Texas native concluded last season by scoring her 1,000th career point in the first round of the WNIT. Gilliam led the team with an average of 14.7 points, good for ninth in the conference.
Defensively Gilliam locked down the opposition, recording a steal in 30 of 32 games a year ago, for a league-leading 80 swipes on the season. At the offensive end she showed her range, as she was second on the team in three-point field goals made with 40. She had a breakout game against East Carolina on March 6, recording a career-high 28 points, including a personal-best six buckets from behind the arc.
SMU will officially begin practice on Friday in preparation for a third-straight postseason appearance. The Mustangs will begin the regular season on Nov. 13 at home against Loyola Marymount. Prior to that contest, the team will play an exhibition on Nov. 9 at Moody Coliseum against Abilene Christian.
