Official DMN Article on GeldingsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Official DMN Article on Geldingsmy office mates are laughing at me. on two fronts
1) "who cares about a pony?" 2) "why aren't yall more worried about football right now, you've sucked for decades and you are 3-2?" ok fine, 3 fronts. 3) "nice pants"

Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsIf you are feeling like you would like to get MORE angry about this, may I suggest...1) read that article, 2) watch that video, and then 3) read Orsini's letter again. Did the trick for me, I highly recommend it

Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsOk, I have generally refrained from comment on this issue. I have been following Peruna for over 40 years. And, yes I have had friends make fun of our "little" horse, but I shrug that off. Their opinion does not matter. I get a chill up my back when I hear the band strike up and Peruna run across the field. I am glad that pony ears has become a tradition. When I was in school the student body supported the football program win or loose. We all stood for kickoffs. The pony ears started during that time. Today, I go to the games and only a small number of the students show up. Only a smattering of people stand up for the kick offs and show their pony fans and that is in the mustang club section. I wish our fans honored our traditions.
Now as to the new Mustangs and how they are going to be used. I read Orsini's letter and I read the DMN article and I still do not know how they are going to be used. The article does not support those of you who say the DMN article and video confirm your worst fears - that Peruna will be replaced. The only one who says these horses will become the new mascot is one of their handlers who has no connection with SMU. It seems like some of you are always looking for things to complain about and rarely see anything to celebrate. How about embracing the success our football team has had. Of course, for some of you, you would have to say you were wrong when you predicted we would have the same record as last year. That may be too much to ask of the doom and gloomers. BEAT NAVY
Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsI have almost stopped coming to these boards because of this stupid Peruna talk. I am a sucker for tradition. I have SMU memorabilia from all decades of the school, including mine and my father's diplomas. But this stuff is going to play out how it plays out. So just watch it happen.
Right now I am more concerned with our team becoming a force in CUSA and Texas. Mascot changes come and go, but this complaining needs to stop. Just wait and see how it all goes. A Mustang Fan and an SMU Class Of 08 Theatre Major. Believe It.

Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsIf these geldings bow down, Peruna may get confused and think they're mares and go on the down low. I can see it now. "Well, Craig a great win by your Mustangs over Navy, but why can't your mascots get along?" "Doug, you don't know horses Peruna just took a Deliverance kinda shine to one those Mustangs. I don't know maybe he thought we were playing Arkansas."
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsI took the liberty of making a few edits to one of the paragraphs in Orsini's letter in light of the article in the DMN:
The new “Mustangs†will be a[n][unnecessarily divisive] addition at SMU. The feisty energy of Peruna and the [kneeling] presence of our new [saddled and broken] “Mustangs†will underscore the football team's theme of "All Grit. No Quit [and We Feel Better Now that We Have Bigger Horses]." Peruna represents a proud tradition [at least to some of our most loyal fans, but what do they know?], and the rescued "Mustangs" have shown the rugged determination to survive and thrive [and respond well to attempts to tame them and make them bend over on command, I mean “at the appropriate timeâ€] - a fitting metaphor for “Mustang†athletics. Together, they will represent a [different, time-honored] tradition at SMU [--namely, sacrificing your individuality in a misguided attempt to fit in with the "cool" rich crowd,] which [has been] enjoyed by [many of the] students, parents, alumni [who are our real target audience,] and [snickered at by] fans [of teams who realize that it is not the 77 year old mascot that represents a losing tradition, but the losing that represents a losing tradition].

me upon my pony on my boat i propose that we create a pond in the south endzone where those kids now play. put a boat with a pony and rider in there the other horse can run wild around campus. lyle lovett should replace mmm. should easily fire up the team.
Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsConsidering we're going to have Peruna, who is raucous by nature, and two trick ponies who are only 3 months from being wild....
...... and a cannon and jet flyover, we could very well see one of hte horses spooked and go crazy or result in a 3 way equine battle-royale. Should be great disaster potential. With our luck, Peruna will freak out on the other two horses and attack, giving the admin the excuse they need to get rid of him, or make him completely irrelevant. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Official DMN Article on Geldings
Well, lets see, we are 2-0 in conference for the first time since 1986, and 85% of the talk on here is about Peruna. What does that tell you. This has absolutely nothing to do with winning, son. It is much more important than winning. I love the football team, but I love SMU more. Peruna represents SMU. Peruna is a link to our proud past. You [deleted] on Peruna, you [deleted] on SMU. Period. I will support, but I will never forgive this embarrassment, even if we go to the Sugar Bowl fifteen times in a row.
Re: Official DMN Article on Geldings"its going to play out" the way SMU Fans make it play out. No doubt in my mind Big Phony Ponyz are there to phase out or deemphasize Peruna. Also, no doubt that negative public outcry will force school's hand. We get to make the decisions in the long run-just like we made the decisions in the long run on Pye's deemphasis of football program-Pye considered shutting the program down-twice had school wide debates and studies. President, AD and Head Coach don't get to force wildly unpopular decisions down our throat in the long run.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: Official DMN Article on Geldings
Be advised, that isn't what they say that should concern you. It's what they DON'T say. And for the 15 zillionth time, the football program's improvement and protecting our mascot are mutually exclusive. How hard is this for people to understand. It's nothing for lazy thinking, "Oh, well if we want to get better, we need to change the mascot.'' I'm all for a coaching changing the locker rooms, weight rooms and everything that pertains within the program, but when the head football coach starts JACKING with our mascot, then I have a problem. Again, June Jones should not have any connection to this mascot mess. But there he is, right smack dab in the middle of it.
Re: Official DMN Article on GeldingsHe didn't get his way last year when he sneaked a horse into Ford and Turner hit the roof. The only way JJ got this done was to go behind the backs of everyone, get it done, and no one had any way to get out of it. There are only two people who could get this changed, and they're not going to post here.
