According to Wickipedia, the first Peruna was not a Shetland, but a pony (a small horse standling at or less than 14.2 "hands"), donated from a race track--probably a small thorougbreed. Many wild horses including mustangs stand within this limit, due to habitat and are classified as ponies. However, it is not ususal to refer to a mustang as a pony. The Shetland is a unique breed, bred down in size, for work in the mines. So, basically is this argument is about whether Peruna, might be replaced soon or when the current one is retired, by a small horse or a mustang or a Shetland pony--even though our first mascot was a horse and not a Shetland?

This is a chance to fix what should not have happened in the first place.

The first Peruna WAS a Shetland Pony, unless you think the camera lies:

Just checked out Wickipedia again (the picture is there)...the first paragraph is a bit confusing, but I think you are right.
I don't have a horse 'er shetland in this fight, Just so we continue to be the Mustangs, not some colored wave, or bird, or dog or housecat, lion, bear, etc. But, am I right, this all about the size or breed of the horse of our mascot?

Partly, but also significent is the use of a rider. Once you put a rider on the horse, the horse is no longer the focus, but instead the rider becomes the focus.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Horses were much ado about nothing.

But did you notice that Peruna did not lead the team out? He just stood on the sideline.

I think that was the fault of the handlers. From watching them, seems like they miscommunicated. One gave the other a look like "well dammit...we missed leading the team out."

I will buy that. They seemed to be in good position, but there was a lot of stuff going on in all directions. I enjoyed the evenings entertaiment fir the most part.
