please take the Bennett love somewhere else...how did he follow up that 6-6 season?

with each new coaching staff, you hope for year over year improvement until you have a legitimate program. Looks to me like JJ is on track. It would appear he has increased a lot of people's expectations for this season in only his 2nd year. Maybe we should go back and check the pre-season predictions to see how many had us at 5-1 at this point.

After watching the Texas-OK game, then USC-ND, then SMU-Navy, I couldn't help thinking how devastating the DP was. The SMALL crowd, the team struggling and then, losing again.

Jones has to do rebuilding that should have been done 20 years ago. The team is better, and seems to get better every week. The team played their hearts out. JJ took this job knowing what a hole SMU has dug for themselves with the help of the NCAA. Give him some time. It took 25 years to get to this point. 18 games is a fraction of 25 years. This team could easily be 5-1. They need to win at least 3 more, but I think they have a shot at of winning out. A good shot at winning 4 more. JJ has this program on the right track.

Very true.

Most of the blame for this one goes to the coaches. No half-time adjustment, poor play selection in the second half and poor decision making. I feel JJ has 'dumbed down' the offense for
BLM so that he will not throw so many interceptions. We should have run more in the second half when Navy started dropping 8 deep. Our O-line was doing a good job on protection and also creating holes for Shawnbrey and Line. Dink and dunk may not be exciting but it will move you down the field.

. This is not an overnight turn around. When your head coach is being very well compensated I think we lose perpespective on the amount of time that it does take to turn around a football program. We are making progress and yes most of us or all of us are getting tired of "moral victories". But look at the quality of kids that are actually considering smu as a choice to play football. Will that translate into them coming here I don't know, but I hope so. I do know as I look at the different recruiting list I am seeing the type of quality players that would never have considered smu in the past.
We all want to see smu return to winning football. I hope to see the day it is hard to get a ticket to a home game.
Right now I am mad, pissed and whatever else emotion I can come up with cause we gave away a game we should have won last night.
But my friend and I left the stadium last night, thinking this program is headed in the right direction.
I still do not like this style of offense, but it is what it is.

lwjr- well said. I despise losing at anything but was very suprised at the way we played last night. I expected much worse results based on our performance against them last year.
Yes, we are on the right track but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel just makes you want to get there much faster.

It was a great game. This was the first game I have ever attended 100% sober.

Did any one notice the bad snap to BO he caught one handed and then threw the slant touch down. That’s his best recovery and cool under fire all year.

And the final result was an excellent reason to get totally wasted after the game. :D

I think what you're hearing from some folks, though, is SMU could have "EASILY" gone 6-6 in '07 instead of 1-11. And could have "EASILY" gone 8-4 in '06, instead of 6-6.

The cupboard wasn't exactly bare. We aren't fielding a freshman team, like it '89.

It's OK for people to have high expectations for something good to happen soon.

After watching the last two weeks, I've never been more sure that Jones will turn the corner here. I thought we played a helluva game vs a very good opponent.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Let's see, we scored more points against Navy than anyone has all year (including Ohio State and Pittsburgh), and were it not for one unbelievably easy missed INT and one of the worst pass interference calls in the history of ever, we would have won that game 42-28.

I [deleted] as much as anyone, but that post is really stupid. Give me this team minus 2 TDs over any over any of the garbage Phil Bennett put together.

Even June's defense looks better than PB's, and that's all PB knew how to coach.

bagice wrote:How's it going? I just got back with the game and I thought I would write you some comments...

Tough one eh? Bet you thought you had that one. Sucks to get beat by your lil Navy Protege like that in overtime...Gotta hand it to him though, he dropped 8 back in coverage all night to stifle Bo and it worked...you and him just can't resist going deep, even if they are giving you the short stuff...oh well, its over now, you can stand back up and put your panties back on..the Navy Defensive coordinator is done with you now...

How bout that Bo..No INTs again! Course 19 completions for 200 yards hardly will cut it in the run and shoot...but darn it, we were close...

Oh, and how bout them big ponies you just had to have? That sure caused a [deleted] storm didn't it..SMU, to their credit really dialed that one down. Was a good try though, if I was 1-11 last year with my only win against a FCS team and one of my 3 wins this year against an FCS team, guess I would try and take the focus off the field too..

Funny thing is, people think you are great..like SMU is kicking butt like never before...they sure do have short memories...Bennett had us 6-6 just 3 years ago and a hair short of a bowl game..hell...two hairs short of being in the C-USA title game..to be fair though,, you two do have some things in common, like 1-11 seasons....oh and Phil wanted big ponies too...oh wait, nevermind, he honored SMU traditions, had similar results, and didn't cost 2 million a year....

Oh well, I am sure the sunshiners still think you are great..we will get em next week....Maybe you can eff up a little more between now and then and destroy some more traditions to mask your cruddy record.
