Shawnbrey McNeal comments

Postby PonyPride » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:44 am

The Mustangs' junior running back met with the media for a few minutes after the game. Some of his thoughts:

• Despite missing considerable practice time during the week because of a sore back, he was "100 percent" Saturday night.

• McNeal said the game's outcome was very disappointing for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that the Ponies didn't come away with the Frank Gansz Trophy. He said the locker room was very quiet after the game, that nobody said much of anything as the team showered and changed. He said although he never had the opportunity to play for Gansz, he felt the emotional effect of not winning the Gansz Trophy. When he transferred to SMU from Miami, McNeal said Gansz was "the first coach to embrace me with open arms." He said Gansz didn't focus on academics or football. "It was just me — he wanted to make sure I was alright."

• McNeal, who turned 21 Saturday night, also said the game held extra emotional importance for him. He transferred from Miami in part because of health issues facing his mother. He said his mother was at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, marking the first time she had seen him play in person since he graduated from Dallas's Madison High School. "I wanted to win tonight for her," he said.

It seem liked on several critical downs June pulled Shawnbrey for the other back. Not sure why he was not on the field more...he was on fire.

That 28-yard run early in the second half was pretty special, wasn't it.

I hate when they do this. Line averaged 4 yards a carry and they often brought him in on third down. I would like to see Mcneal in on 3rd downs.

He gives the defense another weapon to worry about. Line is not a threat in 3rd and long situations. He has size and is good for goal line/short yardage running.

JJ addressed this in his PC. The answer was pretty much the same thing JJ says about everything. "well, y'know..it's just what we've always done. we have a big back, then a little back. y'know. anyway. yeah.."

Yep, and that is one of the problems. He is very predictable which is one of the reasons that we seem to get pounded the second half of games.

I commented to my friend Dr.V during the game where would we be this year without McNeal? The NCAA did us a solid giving him his hardship.

It would be great if someone could make sure she can attend each of the home games- health permitting of course.

Can we do that within the NCAA rules or is that a violation?

If SMU does it, I think it's a violation. I think some other school was doing something similar and got busted a little bit.

Part of the reason for getting Line in there might have had to do with the fact that McNeal had a sore back last week. If it was third-and-short, getting Line in there makes sense, since he could smash into the middle and take a huge hit, whereas McNeal might risk injury when charging into the pile.

sounds like this confirms my fear that the team will be so down from last nights loss that Houston will destroy us.
