Truly a losing mentality.

"If you think you are beaten, you are. If you like to win but think you can't it's almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost. For out in the world we find success begins with a person's will. If you think you are outclassed you are. You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win the prize. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man but sooner or later to the man who thinks he can! "

My dad passed these words to me from a famous poem when I just began playing sports. It is a shame nobody passed these words on to June or some of you "if we can only win six games" fans. Hopefully, June is telling the players behind closed doors that they can win every game they play and only telling the media and others that his goal is to win six. "You gotta believe" as the Baylor coach said after leading his team to the Cotton Bowl in 1974 after a 50 year drought!

You know, I once listened to Phil Bennett talk the great believing we can win every game BS. Rah Rah BS. He didn't believe it. And frankly, I got tired of hearing it.

June is keeping his kids in the here and now and making them believe in a goal they vizualize as being within their reach. This team hasn't been to a bowl game and suffered generations of losing. If you had told these kids they were going to win Conference USA or go undefeated in the next four months, they were not going to believe it.

June says SMU is going bowling in 2009 and I believe it. That says a hell of a lot more than Phil Bennett saying we are going to win championships.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Great quote

I know Jones said his goal is a bowl game.

If he did actually say the goal was to win six games, it was in the context of getting to a bowl.

I'm sure June has told the players they can win every game they play -- by watching the game film the players know that he was right -- they could have won every game so far.

"...the losing culture..."
"...the losing mindset..."

Whatever it is, I have said it before, and I continue to think it. It's an attempt at a headfake (see Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture).

The urgent (winning now) is the enemy of the important (sustaining the winning program/culture). It is what it is.

SMU should have beaten WSU, and they should have beaten Navy. Period. Those games were too close, and SMU had the momentum in both. No excuse.

But I love my Mustangs anyway. Go 'Stangs!!! Beat Houston!!!

We all know the bowl threshold has lowered. SMU went to its last bowl (Aloha in '84) with a 9-2 record. The '72 7-4 team didn't sniff a bowl.

Get off six talk. Talk "7-up" .... it may take that for a bowl this year.
