Talked to friend the other day, former football coach for a number of years in SWC. Really respect his opinion. He said that the proliferation of these spread offenses in high school football and then into college is partly the result of the summer football camps and the seven on seven drills that high school players are participating in. Those events allow them to hone the skills that they go into college with. Having said that, the various teams, pro and college that are using more and more of the Wildcat, Wildhorse type formations are really using essentially some of the single wing concept.

the summer camps are the best thing that ever happened to Texas High School Football. There was a day when Texas didn't produce many top passing QBs. Texas did not allow more than 2 players from the same team to attend the same camp in Football or Basketball for years. Now there are usually at a minimum 20-25 QBs from Texas starting at Division 1A programs. Its a direct result of the skills refined at 7 on 7 camps.

Alaric wrote:just looking at some video and reading on-line and it looks like a lot of people convert their 3-4 to a 5-3 by adding 2 defensive tackles (inside the DEs on the OTs) to the nose guard for 5 down linemen, line up two outside 2 LBs just outside the DTs and bring up the strong safety to a DEEP middle LB position. your defensive linemen have dive responsibility and are responsible for keeping OL off the LBs plus they should string plays out laterally. your SS has responsibility for all 3 run options and better be a monster but should be unblocked. Corners have pass responsibility only, FS has mainly pass responsibility but supports against the run. Selling out with 8 in the box every single play.

June Jones said they spent the defensive practices during the bye week working on defending Navy

From the link Stallion posted regarding the game:

"It’s not as if SMU was doing anything unusual to stop the Navy offense. As suspected, the whole 4-man front, same-schemes-as-last-year crap was a total smokescreen. SMU came out with a 5-man front. On the first drive, they even looked a little bit like Air Force. Scheme-wise, anyway. The safeties played in a cover 2, with the playside safety stepping up in run support. At first, the pitch key also stepped into the backfield to cover the pitch.""

we varied it a lot. some of the time we brought Youri Yenga and Patrick Fleming up to the line as additional DEs and then sometimes had Rock Dennis on the line too...inside LBs also on the line sometimes but often backed off with one blitzing
