Re: Burning Redshirts - JJ StylePlease correct me if I am wrong on this, but I believe that Braylon Williams is JUCO so we don't have to worry about burning his redshirt. I also believe that Ben Hughes is a greyshirt and Fontana, as far as I know, has not played and, barring an unforseen need on the OL, should redshirt.
Re: Burning Redshirts - JJ Style
McConico, Hughes, Fontana, Braylon Williams have not played a down this year...how can they burn a RS ? Check the participation list. Life after Death (Penalty)
Re: Burning Redshirts - JJ StyleThis thread was written in the Spring.

Yah...but somebody brought it up today Life after Death (Penalty)
Re: Burning Redshirts - JJ Styleobviously players that have not hit the field can redshirt but by definition the percentage of play or games played exception applies to kids who have played less than 3 games or a some percentage of plays but SUBSEQUENTLY are hurt and unable to play for the ENTIRE remainder of the season as verifed by a physician. Darius Johnson comes closer to definition but obviously a doctor could not verify that it was a season ending play since he subsequently was able to play. You can't just say a player is out with injury-you have to file medical paperwork proving it.

Re: Burning Redshirts - JJ Stylethere are 3 ways to gain an extra year of eligibility-this is my stock answer from when Darius Johnson got hurt. Actually Rock came in under the third catefory
I spent a lot of time clearing this up on the Scout site when Darius got hurt- there are 3 ways that you can get an extra year: Again NCAA Manual is in pdf form so I'm not sure how to link the specific section but Bylaw 14.2.4 has several ways you can get a hardship waiver and one of the specific reasonsis if you play in less than 20% or 3 games. Then in 30.6 the NCAA has a separate rule for the waiver of the 5 Year Rule. So I think the correct terminology(rarely used I might add) is: 1. Redshirt( ie did not play a down) 2. Hardship Waiver(more commonly known as medical redshirt) 3. Waiver of the 5 Year Rule(more commonly known as hardship waiver) --------------------------------------------------------- search for NCAA Manual then put in Bylaw Nos. Plus I'm not sure they even include the mechanics of applying for the 14.2.4 hardship waiver in the Manual but 30.6.1 clearly provides that the waiver of the 5 year Rule occurs after the players eligibility has expired. I note that there is a reference to regulations implemented by the Committe in charge of supervising the Rules. See 14.2.4 So that maybe where the time for filing the 14.2.4 application for waiver of the rules is located ----------------------------------------------------------- Yeah both you and I have been saying that the 5 Year Waiver has to be after eligibility is complete. It's less conclusive as to when the Hardship Waiver(commonly referred to as the medical redshirt) can be granted. Its probably in the regulations that aren't part of the Manual. But I see one major difference between 14.2.4(Hardship Waiver) and 30.6(5 Year Waiver). The 14.2.4 waiver is determine by the school's conference offices with appeal rights to NCAA Committee) while the 30.6 Waiver is determined by the "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
