JJ did these luncheons when he was at Hawaii and they were *very* interesting and provided in-depth details and analysis that you just could not get from watching the game live or on TV. It was always interesting to see the various coaches go over the film and explain the different choices being made and the reasons why the play succeeded or failed.

It was clear that many times an INT that a QB was blamed for was actually because the WR made a bad read or slipped on a cut...the need for QBs and WRs to be in sync is one reason JJ's teams played better in the second half of the season than at the start of the season. I also loved how the coaches would highlight how the WRs blocking downfield made it possible for long gains by other WRs or RBs.

In Hawaii they let anyone into the luncheons, even if they are not a Na Koa member (Hawaii's version of the Mustang Club). However, it is much harder for rival teams to send people to Hawaii for the lunch than it is to get to Dallas.

The luncheons must have a completely different feel this season! I'm happy for SMU fans that the team seems to be turning a corner...you all have waited long enough for this turnaround. Congratulations on the win at Tulsa and hopefully you get a win over Rice, let some of your injured players heal up and let your backups get some game reps.

I cannot imagine how frustrated SMU fans like you have been over the past two decades, but the turnaround must be so rewarding for all the fans. I honestly thought that next year was going to be the year that SMU would finally get to a bowl, but the young players have done better than I expected. The turnaround isn't complete yet, but at least the team and the fans can see where things are headed and it seems like the players have bought into what the coaches are teaching.

I am shocked at how good SMU's defense has been this year! I followed ponyfans last year and remember all of the comments on how bad the defense was...and a year later the D is doing better than even the most optimistic person would have expected! Hunt, Davis, TT, Banjo, etc., give your D a foundation for the future and they are making a difference already.

By the way, the Na Koa luncheons got *much* more crowded when the team started to win more. In 2007 they had lunches that were filled to the capacity of the room. I'm guessing your luncheons will need more seats available if things go well the rest of this season.

Good luck against Rice! I hope that your injured players heal up and your backups get a lot of game reps.

It is pretty unusual for the starting QB of a D-IA team to have to deliver pizzas at night to make ends meet. He's done pretty well in games though so he is being looked upon as the QB of the future since he's just a sophomore. I'm guessing that he's going to get a scholarship in the offseason...but that means that Hawaii will have an amazing number of QBs on scholarship next season:

Jr. Moniz, Austin
Redshirt Fr. Shutter, Graves, Nielsen
True Fr. Spain

Hawaii took 3 QBs in its 2009 recruiting class and all are redshirting.

I've seen a few of SMU's games this season but not all of them. From what I saw and read, Bo Mitchell did not make the progress a QB normally makes in his second season in the offense. At least part of the problem had to be the physical problems Bo had during the season (didn't he have the flu and then appendicitis?), which could have hurt his confidence or got him off his rhythm. I thought it was telling that the coaching staff was getting Padron ready to play even before Bo got hurt...

Anyway, you will need at least 2 QBs ready to play to make it through a season. It is highly unlikely that Padron will avoid having to come out of a game the rest of the season, and injuries happen too. So, having 2 QBs ready to play is crucial for the team.

I remember reading the comments awhile back about why JJ wasn't offering the 3-star QBs that expressed interest in SMU and instead offered Padron a scholarship. It turns out that Padron has looked really good so far--I watched how he came in cold in the Houston game and showed good poise.
