Colleges lining up for Leslee Smith’s services BY Dean Greenaway - BVI News Chief Sports Correspondent Originally published: September 01, 2009 10:34:00 AM Last updated: November 30, -0001 01:54:24 AM image Former BVI High School player Leslee Smith Former BVI High School standout Leslee Smith—who played on the BVI National Team that won silver in the CBC Championships hosted here earlier this summer—is getting looks from several colleges and universities. After helping Team BVI to the silver, Smith returned to Houston where he has been over the last year, and participated in several tournaments with his AAU team, that has helped his stock rise tremendously. During a tournament in Las Vegas SMU head coach Matt Doherty first saw the 6-foot-7, 245-pound wing.
"I got a call after the tournament," Smith told PonyPride.com’s Armen Williams. "I was excited. My coaches were all telling me that after that tournament I'd be getting some offers because of my performance. I was glad that they called me."

Smith, a Humble Christian Life senior without much knowledge of SMU, eventually paid a visit and liked what he saw there. "I thought that it'd be interesting and at the same time I took an unofficial visit,†he told PonyPride.com. “It was a good opportunity to work out and see the campus. I got there on Saturday morning pretty early."

Smith’s interest in SMU came after the Vegas camp when he spoke to Coach Doherty who said that he would definitely offer the BVI native a scholarship. “He said that I have a good feel for the game and he likes me as a player and a person,†Smith explained. “He thinks that I could do well if I came to SMU."

Besides the SMU Mustangs, Smith has offers from Lamar and McNeese State, while USC was recently added.
"They offered right after the Double Pump tournament in Los Angeles,†he said. “I was out there and went and visited the school, too."

With all the available options, Smith is favoring SMU. "I guess the coaches at SMU make me feel more comfortable and I got a chance to see his coaching style. They're on top of my list because I know how Coach Matt coaches and I'm comfortable with that," he explained. Smith still looks forward to visiting a few more programs and does not plan on committing until the late signing period.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
I can only assume you had a nice dose of mustard or something to deaden the taste. I assume we still have just a commitment. When is the signing period? Or is it already underway? Has he actually put his signature on the dotted line?
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruitingI believe the fall signing period begins Nov. 11.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruitingFrom the article above:
Smith still looks forward to visiting a few more programs and does not plan on committing until the late signing period. Do we know that he is now going to sign early?
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
He's signing early and done w/visits. He'll be in Dallas over Thanksgiving for a big hs tourney. we need Mustang fans out, in Pony colors, supporting the kid. He'll love it “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
looks like this is a dated article......? "Originally published: September 01, 2009 10:34:00 AM"
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruitingVery good -- Sept 1, 2009 is prior to November 3, 2009.
If you read past the date, the article provides background some might find interesting.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
Nice - thanks.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
Um....I was answering your question about if he was still looking around at other schools, by pointing out that the date of the article was before he committed to us.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruitingMy question was do we know if he is going to sign early. (Which PonyDoh said is yes)
If someone commits prior to the early signing period, does that mean they have to sign early? I would assume some still wait until the late signing period, but do not know for sure. Just feel better when the ink is dry. Thanks.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruitingLook at this way, you commit in October for the November signing period. The next signing period is not until May.
There's no way this coaching staff would allow that much time to go by. They sealed him by getting the commitment and will close this month. Too much time kills all deals. They didn't recruit this guy just to hang on to the verbal for another 7 months. It's like a football recruiting commitment in January to have him sign in February. We should expect to see the formal announcement in November. I think part of us are freaking out because we haven't had a kid with this kind of potential walk through our halls in awhile. As for the Derrick Roberts comments earlier in this thread, I agree he was a disappointment. But I think his injuries had more to do with that than just his inability to play to his potential. He seemed like a good kid.
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
Where is the Thanksgiving Tourney? or better question which Tourney will they be playing in?
Re: Leslee Smith- Men's Basketball recruiting
it's the pop up http://www.metroplexhoops.com/ “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
