Also, I don't like the phrase "unlikely that more than six teams would be above six wins". Looking at the schedule, there are already 5 teams with five wins. There are two teams with four wins -us and Tulsa and there are two teams with 3 wins - UTEP and UAB. We can control our destiny by winning out. Otherwise, we could be at 6-6 and get nothing again. So, let's focus on beating Rice. If we lose to Rice, bowl selections begin to get out of our hands.

From my sources, we will go to Hawaii UNLESS we are conference champs AND are invited to the Liberty Bowl - for what it's worth.

i.e. in, for instance, the Big XII, the 4th place team in the standings (I think it's the 4th best) automatically goes to the Holiday Bowl, the 7th place (I think) automatically goes to the Texas Bowl, etc.

We don't have that in CUSA. If you are the 3rd place team in the standings, you aren't automatically assigned to, say, the Armed Forces Bowl. If you are the 2nd place team, you aren't automatically assigned to the Hawaii Bowl, etc.

That being said, CUSA has an order for bowls to be able to pick the teams they want. That order is
1) Liberty
2) Hawaii
3 through 6) Everyone else (free-for-all)

Meaning that while the Hawaii bowl gets the 2nd selection, they are under no requirement to pick the #2 team from C-USA. They can pick any bowl eligible team with that selection (barring there being too many 7-win teams to fill the conference obligations, of course.)

Some conferences have additional restrictions on the selection process. C-USA apparently does not.

But the 7-5 teams must be placed first. That means that Hawaii picking second must pick between the 7-5 teams doesn't it. Or can they pick us provisionally at 6-6 and ECU goes to the Eagle Bank Bowl.

It is my understanding that they don't have to choose from a 7-5 team. They just have to make sure the 7-5 teams are accounted for. ie: if there are 4 teams that are 7-5 and 5 bowls available, they can take the 6-6 team, and the other 4 bowls would be forced to choose from the 7-5 teams.

Nebraska got selected ahead for the Gator Bowl last year.
I think Okie St. jumped someone a couple of years ago too.
Cotton Bowl often takes the #3 team instead of #2. (They are unlikely to take the loser of the Big 12 championship game when it is played at Jerry World. Most fans won't make 2 road trips to Dallas in 1 month.)
It's all about ticket sales.
Hence why Notre Dame is always in a better bowl game than they deserve.

ACC has some rules about not selecting a team with more than one additional loss than than the next best team available. Pretty sure that does not exist in the Big 12, as all bowl revenue is split between the schools.
