INDIANAPOLIS -- Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe wants the NCAA to treat teams with 6-6 records the same as teams with winning records when it comes to bowl games.

Under current rules, teams with .500 records can receive a bowl bid only if the school's conference already has a deal with a bowl and all other teams with winning records have been invited to postseason games.

Beebe's proposal would eliminate those exceptions and permit 6-6 teams to be accepted immediately.

Consideration of the Big 12's proposal could lead to a broader discussion about the bowl system.

The Big 12's proposal is expected to be discussed during the NCAA convention in January.

i.e. in, for instance, the Big XII, the 4th place team in the standings (I think it's the 4th best) automatically goes to the Holiday Bowl, the 7th place (I think) automatically goes to the Texas Bowl, etc.

We don't have that in CUSA. If you are the 3rd place team in the standings, you aren't automatically assigned to, say, the Armed Forces Bowl. If you are the 2nd place team, you aren't automatically assigned to the Hawaii Bowl, etc.

That being said, CUSA has an order for bowls to be able to pick the teams they want. That order is
1) Liberty
2) Hawaii
3 through 6) Everyone else (free-for-all)

Big 12 doesn't have automatic tie-ins either.

Nebraska got selected ahead for the Gator Bowl last year.
I think Okie St. jumped someone a couple of years ago too.
Cotton Bowl often takes the #3 team instead of #2. (They are unlikely to take the loser of the Big 12 championship game when it is played at Jerry World. Most fans won't make 2 road trips to Dallas in 1 month.)
It's all about ticket sales.
Hence why Notre Dame is always in a better bowl game than they deserve.

ACC has some rules about not selecting a team with more than one additional loss than than the next best team available. Pretty sure that does not exist in the Big 12, as all bowl revenue is split between the schools.

It is my understanding that they don't have to choose from a 7-5 team. They just have to make sure the 7-5 teams are accounted for. ie: if there are 4 teams that are 7-5 and 5 bowls available, they can take the 6-6 team, and the other 4 bowls would be forced to choose from the 7-5 teams.

I researched that a few weeks ago and I think what it is is if CUSA cannot provide a backup for Army then Big 10 gets this; on the other side if ACC doesn't have enough teams and the MAC can't fill, Big 10 gets in. Those agreements change from year to year and next year if Navy can't fill then Big 10 fills and if they can't then CUSA gets it (if I remember right)

And further, the article is wrong in stating that "The AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis takes the C-USA champion." Liberty has first pick and typically prefers the champion, but it's not an automatic. They can take another team if they think that team will sell more tickets.

I think that traditionally the Hawaii bowl is mostly locals, thats why its usually so crucial that Hawaii is bowl eligible. June would be more of a story and create a better drawn than any of the other options.
