Special Teams Evaluation? Help please

Postby lwedge » Sun Nov 08, 2009 8:59 am

Missed the game - out of town for the bama - LSU game. (Do ALL college refs have the same tutor? Horrible in tuscaloser).

Aside from our fabulous kick blocking teams, how was the kick coverage and kick return blocking?

kick coverage seemed better than previous weeks. rice didn't have any big returns as far as i remember. we didn't have any huge returns either. a couple moves here and there to add 5-10 extra yards but nothing crazy.

even if rice had returned every kick to the 50, those blocked kicks were just so damn amazing i'd be hard pressed to complain about special teams after this one

We covered kicks well, of course, Rice is probably one of the most "athletically challenged" teams we have played this year, they really lack size and speed, so it is hard to use them as a bench mark as to whether or not we have shored up our kick and punt coverage...

I imagine that Sanders would have moved up from his #3 in the nation in punt returns had his big one not been called back. That was about a 50 yard or more swing in field position.

I think the coverage was much improved for this game. I still hold my breath on every one but they did well.

Biggest special team problem was not getting Rice to punt enough times.

There were a lot of missed calls during special teams by officials. I'm guessing everyone saw the block in the back on the one punt coverage play?

That one really made us mad as there was an official looking right at it.....and no call.
