Chavis is their starting point guard. or was, this was his senior year. And 50's Pony is correct, SMU was his top choice until Tech hired Knight, and Bobby began recruiting him.

well Chavis was a Division 1 qualifier out of high school with a 3.95 GPA as well and only transfered to Panola for one year after attending New Hampshire.

A. Knight did not regularly recruit juco players at Indiana. But he's in Lubbock now, and even with him as coach, Lubbock is a difficult place to recruit to, hence the jucos.

2. How many times do people have to tell you that SMU coaches can (and occassionaly do) recruit juco players. There is no policy or rule that prevents them from doing so, but our coaches often choose not to. If what you're talking about is our lack of recruitment of academically questionable individuals who have gone to junior college because they couldn't qualify in division I out of high school and take non-classes at juco, I fail to see why an NIT invitation is worth it.

COREECT GENIUS! he is no longer at one of the premier Basketball programs in America and realizes that in order to compete he must recruit JC/CC players. That's been my point for years. Don't tell me about how Notre Dame, Stanford and Duke do it because SMU is whole new world just like Texas Tech is. Second if you think that Forrest Gregg, John Shumate, Tom Rossley, Mike Cavan, Mike Dement and Phil Bennett all independently came to the conclusion that they didn't want to recruit JC/CC players(except for the ocassional David Page from Cal-Berkley or Will Chavis with a 3.95) when 90% of the programs across America do, you are incredibly naive! If you want to stand for high academic standards fine-but please don't try to convince me that SMU has made a Commitment to compete on an equal playing field as its natural and traditional rivals and please don't try to deflect criticism from your "Academic Model" pathetic performance(26% FB winning percentage) and instead try to pull the wool over people's eyes by blaming everything on Gregg, Rossley, Shumate, Cavan, Dement and now Bennett with his 3-9 finish.

Shumate didnt independantly come to any such conclusion. Its been pointed out to you several times GENIUS that John Shumate signed several transfers from junior colleges and other 4 year schools, including 5 in his last 2 classes. Your memory on this subject appears to be extremely selective. A list of names can be provided for you, if you've forgotten them again, already.

And you know as well as anybody that Chavis's high school grades have no bearing on his admission. All that matters is his transferable hours. He was a good student, thats certainly true, and it makes it more curious that you would try to claim SMU had no shot at him.

Just for the record, in 6 years as HC, John Shumate signed 10 transfer recruits. 2 from 4 years schools and 8 from junior colleges. Names were: Mike Wilson, Kwame Brown, Tony Patterson, Troy Dorner, Keith Chambers, Ike Upshaw, Jemeil Rich, Jermaine Bracey, Andy Bliss and Mohammed Tijani.

There werent any 3.95 gpa's in that group, although I seem to remember that Dorner was a really good student. But there were also a couple who barely stayed eligible.
