To piggyback on what David said about third down -- BTW, I like that --

TCU's PA does the same thing when the opponent faces third down, "It's third down.''

Emphasing third down to the crowd gets those who aren't paying attention to get into it and cheer on the defense to make a stop and create more of the home field advantage. Now, if we could get some people who would routinely stand up on third down.

BTW, David good call on the baskets. I like that. Of course, you could use voice inflection on the player's name especially if they make a big basket to take the lead or during a run or something like that.

I plan to do just exactly that. Always emphasizing OUR PLAYERS with more inflection and dynamics. In the Rice Game, I simply did a courtesy recognition of their players when they made a play or whatever... but on our guys.... made a huge deal of it. I think that final tweak of concept seems to be just the right blend of CLASS, on our part, and being a HOMER. My friend told me about when he was a student and we played TEXAS. He said, even on their scoreboard, anything that SMU did was simply "VISITORS". Don't recall what year this was..... but that is so low class. That kind of behavior is inexcusable.... and I would never allow myself to represent our school and team with such a low class concept.

Speaking of biting my tongue....... when the Rice band did their BS "OK" thing, I wanted to smack the living S out of their band announcer. I had intended when the game was over to say something after the drive safe stuff: "And to the Rice Band..... you've been TERMINATED!"

Of course.... that wasn't approved.

Good stuff Voice; thanks for soliciting and applying ideas from people on this board. That is very refreshing. We are kind of a salty bunch at times, but even when some of us fight like little girls we are all 100% committed to SMU.

A few quick responses:

I like what you are doing on 3rd down WAY better than 3rd Down Thunder of the past. Certain elements of the crowd definitely need some motivation to make noise at the right times.

If Margus like "The Terminator" let's roll with it. Personally, I was hoping for something related to the English translation of his name, Wolf.

I will miss the UTEP game but will be back for Tulane and look forward to seeing/hearing you at some upcoming basketball games.

Great. But I would not recommend using individual nicknames but using names for the different units. Why not refer to the total kick-blocking unit as "terminators" since picking out one guy who granted, is outstanding, but what about Mccain, Thompson who blows the guard up to allow Margus thru and Moore and the others. This is a TEAM and not a me game. I always liked the wrecking crew at A & M and the blackshirts at Nebraska. I thought the BoLevin campaign and song were a disaster as was the June Cometh. I like something like the "Red Swarm" for our total Defense with individual unit names for the line, linebackers and defensive backs. For the offense a total name and then individual unit names for the running backs(along the lines of thunder and lighning) , wide receivers and most importantly....the o-line. QB's get all the glory and yes blame anyway so I am sure a new name will surface for them.

TheMustangsVoice maybe you can tell your boss Orsisni to get a screen name and discuss this with the only true SMU fans...

I applaud your effort...

I totally agree that there are more than just Margus who are responsible for blocked kicks. In reality, Coach said that teams, Rice most recently, actually studied Margus and how to block him. I think, because he is becoming such a "legend" at this, that it will open it up for a lot of other players... and the example of that was when Sterling Moore virtually catapulted over his man and blocked the kick that sailed into the hands of Bryan McCann to make that spectacular 74 yard touchdown. Additionally, and I could be wrong, I think it actually increases the motivation of the entire team.

I do absolutely agree, that individual nicknames would be over the top..... but I do like having a nickname for the offense and the defense.

The "Monsters Of The Hilltop" was, of course, a take off on the old NFL defensive nickname of "Monsters Of The Midway".

Based upon what Coach Jones said at the Mustang Club Lunch, this is going to be a game where everyone of our guys will need to play a smart game. I'm hoping that you all can get folks motivated from the student and alumni side and get folks into the stands. That, not nicknames, is the biggest incentive for the players to bust their buttock and lay everything on the line.

I can assure you, our team is going to give that effort..... we need each of you.

David

I forgot to answer about that comment. In attending the Tulsa, Houston and TCU game, their announcers ALL made a huge deal of the opponent's third down.... trying to get the crowd rowdy and loud to affect the play. Some guys were really obnoxious. I modified mine by singling out that it was an "Owl's Third Down"...... rather than the generic offerings those I heard. Of course, we are at a huge disadvantage because of the lack of support and participation that our team has in the stadium. And from all of the rumblings I have heard.... opinions vary. One of my friends at the Mustang Club lunches told me about the last guy, whom he and others told me, everyone hated for some reason..... that SMU was an intelligent crowd and reminding them it was the other team's third down seemed condescending. The first games I simply said 3rd down in a normal level. After talking to some of the coaches, they encouraged me to make a big deal out of it. Did you see the players and the coaches as well that were jumping on the band wagon when I said "Owl's Third Down"? My first commitment is to make the players and coaches happy.... so, it stays. Sorry.
he Doubletree. Would love to meet an many of you that want to come.

I thought this actually worked pretty well... it seemed to get a good reaction from the crowd. It never hurts to remind the people in the stands who are a bit boozed up and might not be paying as much attention as they should...
