June Jones' Salary

Postby RE Tycoon » Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:00 am

Daily Campus came out with salaries for SMU employees from the University's 2008 tax return. I think we all realized the $2mil. figure being thrown around included assistant coaches salaries, but now we know just how much is going to June. Last season he took home $1,205,164.

I do wonder how much of his contract is tied to certain win and attendance figures, bowl game milestones, etc. If he hits those, does his salary approach the $2 million figure or more?

For comparison here is what other coaches made in fiscal 2008:

TCU: Patterosn - $1,643,071

Baylor: Morris - $1,679,117 (is that a buyout figure?), Briles - $938,108

Rice: Bailiff - $476,842

Other SMU salaries of note

Doherty - $546,229 (30% decrease from previous year)

Turner - $1,017,618
I'm a generally a Turner fan, but that seems very high to me, especially compared to our "benchmark" schools.

Isn't he helping to pay some of the salaries for his coaching staff?

Turner has been here for a long time. I'm sure that his high salary is partially due to his length of tenure.

The $2million raised was for a coach and additional staff salary together.

Seems reasonable to me if he keeps improving the team ====> improving revenues

Is any of his salary paid not included in the $1.2MM and paid directly by newco/SPE Circle of Champions, LLC?

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I do not believe that would advantageous due to tax ramifications.

There is a difference between salary paid by the University and total compensation package. When there is a listing of coaching salaries around the country, it is usually the total compensation package--which includes endorsements, advertising, camps, etc. that the university guarantees to produce for the coach in some manner but would probably not be listed on the university tax return.

There is also most likely a bonus structure included for making bowl games, winning conference, etc. Some schools have bonuses for the team's academic performance as well.

Wow, so JJ is getting $1.2 million from the $2 million and the rest is going to the coaches. When they realized that he might actually leave (Hawaii reporters mentioned that UH never really thought he was going to leave until the very end) the University of Hawaii offered JJ $1.7 million in salary per year for 5 years. That is salary *before* benefits like the state-funded retirement, so $1.2 million before benefits from SMU could actually end up being about half of the $1.7 million JJ turned down from Hawaii.

UH gave McMackin $1.1 million per year for 5 years in salary, not counting benefits, which was equal to their first offer to JJ. Hawaii made 3 offers and it appears that the second and third offers were higher than what JJ took from SMU.

I read the following quote from the article to mean his total compensation from the school, including all the benefits from above.

This form is a public record. The data for SMU's 2008 fiscal year represent the time period between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2008. All pay figures represent salary plus the cost of benefits

However, I do not know how benefits such as cars, housing or sweet deals on mortgages, etc are reported. I'm sure the IRS wants to collect on that. Again, not an expert.
