SMU fanbase sending confusing messages

Postby George S. Patton » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:36 am

Some of us are actling like winning a conference championship really isn't that big of a deal and that we should just be satisfied about just being bowl eligible.

When you're in this position to win a title, you prepare and do everything you can to win this championship. Or else why even bother playing the game.

Now that we've reached 6 bowl-eligible wins (not even assured of a bowl yet), the goal should be winning the CUSA championship. Marshall is the next step toward winning it. And should we take care of business, then Tulane and so on...

Some of this stuff just reads like, "Ok we have six wins, the rest is gravy. We'll just see what happens.''

Heck with that! I don't know about the rest of you but I want some hardware to be placed in the Lloyd Center. I want to see a banner that says, "SMU -- 2009 CUSA Champions''. I betcha the team does too.

Conference Championship first and let everything else filter after that. And if anybody doesn't carry the same mentality, then you don't have a competitive bone in your body.

Actually, nothing is guaranteed yet. Let's get win number 7, then worry about winning the division. Then let's get our asses to Memphis!

I refer you to the third graph. Just about every coach in America has a team goal of winning a conference championship at the start of every season. That's why you play. I don't care that we're at 6 wins. Make the push to win the damn championship or go down swinging.

What the hell is the matter with you people.

Oh. I agree. I want 10-4 now. But let's get there one game at a time. I want a nice road win this weekend to start it off.

Again, the third graph of the first post speaks to that.

Pretty sure everyone wants that, yes. Beat Marshall. Beat Tulane. Beat whoever represents the East. And then beat whoever is unfortunate enough to face us in a bowl game.

100% agree. The fact that we're in position to go the conference championship game should be paramount to all of our fans. Absolutely amazig that this a possibility. However, what's more amazing is June's push for the Hawaii Bowl at all costs. Reallly seems like a transparent and selfish excuse to return to the islands, despite what's best for the fans/program.

I can't help but wondering if he just doesn't like to escape his comfort zone. He had much more successs in Hawaii Bowls than he did the last time he played on SEC team in the Sugar Bowl. Is he afraid of the possibility of getting embarrassed again? Doesn't look like we're going to find out...

I can't imagine anyone would rather be forced to watch us play Idaho on TV than attend a game vs Ole Miss, Arkansas, etc... What a potential deflating end to a terrific season. Does this mean that we'll just default to the Hawaii Bowl for years to come, regardless of our record?

I am pretty sure what we want has ZERO effect on what the players and coaches want and how they approach the next game, the game after that and the game after that. Let us be fans and share our thoughts, hopes, dreams and expectations and let the players and coaches worry about taking care of business on the field.

Damn, GSP. I agree. The focus every season and every game should be going 14-0. not 8-5. Where is that quote somebody has in their signature... "If you lick the lollipop of mediocrity, you'll suck forever."

Sorry general, but while I hope we win out, count me in the anything more than making a post-season appearance is gravy camp. After 25 years of wandering through the wasteland, I'll take any drink of post-season water that comes along. Now, I am still not convinced that 6-6 will do it, so I think we have one more must-win game before we can count on anything.

I don't know that I agree with the entire premise of the thread. I don't know ANYONE that is saying that what we've done will suffice. Everyone I know is looking at win 7, then another win on Thanksgiving, then a conference champioship game.

If there are people that are satisfied where we're at right now, then they were probably not too upset at the team qallowing in mediocrity the last 20 years.

No one should be content with what we've done. GSP, I agree there is still work ahead, and that's the bandwagon everyone needs to get on if they're not already.

Hope to see you all in Memphis! Beat Marshall!

At worst we finish 7-5. Had you told me that prior to the season I'd have died of a heart attack. Be happy with what we have and should we by some chance get to play in the conference title game and win it then just freaking enjoy it. The losing has warped so many minds around here which is understandable, but this team has vastly overacheived. I guess you really can "coach 'em up".
Back off Warchild seriously.
