Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesSome great quotes in this:
“Everybody’s going crazy,†he said. “The excitement is at a level that I don’t know how to really compare it to anything.†“This is basically happening because the kids are finally starting to believe that they can win,†Jones said. “We’ve beaten probably five teams that are better than us this year. Everybody’s probably more talented than we are, but the kids have just believed, hung in there, and won.†Here's where the Hawaii haters will start to turn red: “I’m locked in,†Jones said of the Hawaii Bowl. “I don’t know about everybody else, but that’s where we’re going.†“The first thing he wanted to do was to go to Pearl Harbor with the guys,†Jones said of Gansz in a telephone interview. “I told them that in August that we were going to do that and that’s what we’re going to do.†Stick an apple in your mouths whiners: we're going to Hawaii.

Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesThe article adds insight into why Coach Jones wants to go to Hawaii even as the Conference Champs.
Re: SMU Football in the NY Timesblah blah blah
We win the conference we are going to liberty in memphis no matter what JJ has said or promised - It will teach him not to underestimate his team (or more likely overestimate the CUSA level of competition). Otherwise we go to Hawaii Nothing to debate - its all good either way.
Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesMuch better to go to Liberty bowl.....
but if my biggest complaint at the end of the season is we went to the Hawaii bowl as CUSA champs, I'm not going to complain about it - I'm just going to enjoy the moment. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesLike I said in another thread...let's get behind the team and support them to win the conference championship...then let the big boys hash out the bowl deals. Personally I would rather see us fight an SEC team than a WAC team...but whatever.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesIt's a 'win one for the Gipper'-type scenario on the Hilltop!
This may be the first time there's ever been a sports article about SMU in the NYT in which the DP was not mentioned! ![]()
Re: SMU Football in the NY Times
Interesting thought. Coach Jones may very well be using Gansz's memory and his promise to Gansz as a motivational thing for the players. If so, it has worked very well. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: SMU Football in the NY Times
Check out the Facebook pages for some of the players over the past couple of months and you'll see comments like 'This one's for you, Ganszy!' or 'We're winning this one for Gansz!' Oh, I think JJ has done that very thing. And yes, it has.
Re: SMU Football in the NY TimesI am stoked to see the PR the ponies are getting around the country. Just think what 2 more wins will do.
Re: SMU Football in the NY Times
now imagine what all the naysayers will say if you get completely smashed by a 6-6 tennessee team? stuff like see they cant even compete with the bottom of the sec, or they only do well when they face comparable talent... etc.. not to mention recruits care about winning, not just playing good team... they want to beat them... "Do nothing that is of no use..."
Re: SMU Football in the NY Times
If SMU loses another game. Is that what you want? ![]()
