I'm sorry, June.

Postby Glenn Sosbee » Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:28 pm

I admit it, I was wrong about you. I wanted Paul Johnson or Dennis Franchione in here. I wanted to RUN the football down peoples throats and bring back the Pony Express. I didn't want to pass anymore. Passing the ball wasn't working at SMU. The whole run-n-shoot thing never produced wins around here, just lofty QB stats. I sensed we were going down that same old road with you.

You have proven to be more flexible with your offense than I thought you might be, as far as a willingness to run. I guess having McNeal in the backfield would alter anyone's offensive scheme a little, but it's still nice to see.

I also underestimated your staff. The big-play defense and special teams play has been outstanding this year and a huge key to SMU's success. So hats off to those dudes as well.

When you follow up a Bowl win (can't believe I'm saying that) with another strong recruiting class, you will have officially put SMU back on the football map. Coach, I misjudged you and I apologize. I hope you find it in your heart to forgive me. Thanks for making football fun again on the Hilltop. I hope you plan on staying a while.

It takes a big man to admit his mistake, there are a few on this board

that would never admit to being wrong.

The critisism of the 'Run and Shoot offense from the 70's' being outdated etc.was overdone by a few on here...these coaches have adapted to their situation and the athletes/players that are available to them including McNeal, to make this program work. The foundation of the 'Mouse Davis' Run and Shoot is still here and the vertical passes will open this up even more with better and faster threats downfield but with a major running and catch and run talent like McNeal is the deal that put this program over the top and made this a much more dangerous team to play against. ( Thank you NCAA for once)

moving to the 3-4 defensive alignment was another example of using your personnel; we can recruit LBs and DEs but there are only so many DTs to go around.

If the D gives up 600+ yds today, we are in trouble. Beat Marshall!

Like Glenn I wanted to see us hire a coach who would run the ball. I thought that our model should be Ken Hatfield's Rice teams and Navy. Undersized, even somewhat slow players can make up for lack of natural ability with well timed and executed option play. When you are out-manned on defense, a grind it out offense can run time off the clock, giving the better team less time to score. I felt like the fatal flaw to PB's offense was that we would go 3 and out without using any time.

Now June Jones is here. He knows what he is doing. His team is young and hungry and a helluva lot of fun to watch. If we can bring a little bit of defense to CUSA, we will be the perennial team to beat.

PS: TCU has been hauling in an awful lot of talent that would have been going to SMU back in my day. Lets get those kids back, build our program with them, and run TCU into the ground.

If we give up 600 yards and win - like we did last week - then it's a great day.

Go Mustangs!

Wrong -

giving up 600 and winning is a good day
giving up 250 and winning by 40 while our offense puts up 500 is a great day

time to put the bar up a little higher around here.

I was a JJ supporta from the start. Thought Paul Johnson would be great - but both coaches landed in the right places. For SMU, I think we needed a change in mentaility and attitude which I know that June has been a big part of. There is so much to the pshycological aspect of winning vs. losing that had to be overcome on the hilltop - June was the perfect fit.

Agree - hope he sticks around for a while - but if he is back on the islands in three years - I will be thankful for the time that we had.

It is better to have loved June Jones than not to love June Jones at all.

Agree 100%. I think he is gone in 3 yr.s though. However, I also think he will help get the right coach to replace him.

I'll kiss his [deleted] when we win a bowl game. This thing is turning thankfully. We've had quite a bit of luck this year, I'm hoping when Padron is a senior we'll be pretty good. I hate the fact he kicked Willis to the curb as we could have won a few more last year. We are lucky to have JJ to change the losing mentality -- McNeil and Hunt are MVP's this year. Maybe he'll stick around 1 more year past 5.
