You guys and your redshirt-burning worries

Postby MiracleOnMockingbird » Fri Nov 27, 2009 12:30 pm

I think all this fretting is getting a little bit ridiculous.

All other things being equal, I think it is good to preserve a player's redshirt year.

But all other things are not equal if you are talking about the difference between winning or losing a game! When you have still got a chance to go to the conference championship game at that!

I doubt our #1 worry in December 2012 will be "darn it, 2013 is shot now because we won't have McConico." The coaches have 4 years' worth of chances to recruit guys as good or better, and chances are they will get better recruits coming off winning seasons than coming off 1-10.

Plus, a lot can happen between now and then. Guys get hurt, transfer, flake out and quit, whatever.

I seem to recall some saying the coaches shouldn't "burn" Padron's redshirt year. If the coaches had listened to that, nobody would be worrying about where to get red-and-blue leis right now.

Very good points. Obviously nobody hopes McConico (or anyone else) gets hurt down the road, thereby requiring a redshirt year, but my hope is that recruiting gets so much better every year that we'll have new players too good to keep off the field ... so we might as well play what we've got now.

Beat the hell out of Tulane!

Agreed, we are not deep enough to start preserving our redshirts, JJ has always said if the kid can play, he will play even if he is a true freshman. If we need him now to help us win, play him.

Agreed. I like the idea of saving redshirts, in an ideal world, but I also like the fact that JJ says he "owes it to the seniors" to put the best players on the floor and make every effort to win.

I was one of the people who didn't want to see Padron lose his redshirt, under the theory that "teams who start freshman QBs generally don't win." While I still think that is mostly correct, I was totally wrong regarding Padron. I'm very glad he took over when he did.

Whoa. Someone here actually owns what he says and pipes up to say he was wrong? WOW

Actually, this guy is right on. Without seeing KP play, who would have wanted to burn his redshirt? Did anyone see what happened when BLM played his freshman year? Exactly.

Where are we getting the information that J. R. McConico might burn his redshirt this game. Not saying itr's not true but what source is that coming from?

I didn't want them to burn Padron's red shirt either... Am I glad the things worked out the way they did? Yes. Am i surprised? Yes and No. Yes I'm surprised with how well he has managed the game as a true freshmen, and very impressed with the way he made big throws at crucial parts of the game. I am not surprised that he is the best qb on the team

I thought burning McConico's red shirt worked out. Beanie got worked over last week. They didn't throw much in McConico's direction today but he had good coverage on a couple plays they looked in his direction.
