What I would love to see happen to the BCS

Postby Football4ever » Fri Dec 04, 2009 12:07 am

Bama beat Florida
Cincinnati beat Pitt
Texas beat Nebraska

Nat. Champ: Texas vs Bama- Texas win
Sugar Bowl: TCU vs Florida- TCU win
Orange Bowl: Cincinnati vs Boise- Cinci win

Just a dream, but wouldn't that throw the BCS for a loop?

The 2 problems I have with a playoff are:

1) Doesn't matter if it's a 4,6, or 8 team playoff, you're going to have teams whine who are left out asking why don't they deserve it? Ex: 8th and last seed is an 11-2 Oregon team and they get it, but the 9th and 10th ranked teams could be an 11-1 non BCS scool and an 11-2 BCS school, why dont' they deserve the shot?

2) A playoff is all good and fun, but what happenes when your team who has played perfect all year, stumbles in the first game, thus rendering the regular season completely worthless? You'll wish they played right for the NC, instead of 2 extra games. By continuing to have the BCS or bowl selection committee, you continue to make each regular season game important, NOT giving teams the "attitude" of 'oh we just lost to so and so but it's cool, as long as we don't lose more than two times we should be able to sneak in'...

True, there are pros and cons either way, but personaly, I'd rather see a playoff than have 4 teams end the season undefeated which could happen this year.

With a playoff system there would not be a BCS.

If your team loses its first game, then they obviously were not as good a team as you thought they were.

Some how every other college sport manages to make the playoff system work.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

it just means that we will have to schedule killer non-conference games when we start dominating c-usa.

My number one reason for a playoff is that is the ONLY way SMU will ever be able to play for the National Championship. Under the present system, if you are not in a BCS conference you can forget about playing for the National title. Presently if not in a BCS conference it does not matter how good you are because your schedule by definition is easier than any BCS conference school.

My personal hope is that UT loses to Nebraska, Cincy wins and Boise wins. That would create what I call the nuts on the table scenario. Will the BCS have the cojones to put TCU in the National Championship Game against Bama or Florida or will they somehow finagle it so that UT goes (or a FL/Bama rematch), or Cincy leaps over TCU (by reason of their win over Pitt?)? And what pressure will Fox put on to deal with the potential ratings hit of TCU, Boise or Cincy instead of UT? This would create in my view a perfect storm and would in my view help be a catalyst for a playoff. After all if UT or the loser of Alabama/Florida gets left out with "only one loss" and Fox has a terrible ratings game with one of the other schools, you'll see the SEC and Big XII begin to seriously question the BCS formulae. The Big 10 and Pac-10 have already to question it, and remember they own the Rose Bowl and have the ability to pick up their marbles and go to the Rose Bowl every year. Oregon and USC have gotten stiffed before. My view is that until UT really gets hosed, nothing will change.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I am not convinced that there would be a massive ratings dropoff if a TCU was in the National Championship game instead of Texas. Sure, there are a lot more UT fans than TCU fans, but the National Championship game does not rely on just the fans of the teams in the game watcing.

I really don't think the BCS will be around in say 5 yr.s give or take a couple. There is too much opposition even within the BCS ranks.
There will not be a perfect system and some schools will always get snubbed.
The fairest way would be playoffs. Could be 16 teams or 8, 16 would make the season 1 wk longer. However, some teams are playing a 13 game schedule now. Shorten the regular season by 1 game or 2 and the playoff thing is ready to go.
The BCS knows it's on it's heals. That's why they hired W's P.R. guy. That's why there are so many bowls and only partially full, attendance wise, right now. I think there are 34 bowls right now. that means 68 teams. At this rate everyone will be in a bowl in 10 yr.s
The BCS throws bones (bowls) out to keep the wolves at bay. Why a coach from TCU would encourage this makes me believe the MWC is making a push to get it into the BCS. That may happen. I better not hear Patterson cry about his team not being #1 after this plays out, he asked for it.
SMU will never be able to play for a National Championship if the BCS continues, and CUSA is not a part of it.

The problem the BCS sees with TCU going to the NC is that their fans won't fill the stadium like a UT team would.

It's really gonna suck next year when they pass the rule that BCS 6-6 teams get preference over non-BCS 7-5 teams for bowls.

A sixteen team playoff is the answer. See the Peter Schrager article on Fox Sports for how that would work. Everything else is BS. The lower divisions in football have a playoff and there is no good reason for Div 1 not to have one. The only reason the BCS stays in effect is to hog all the money.

I do not understand this, the BCS does not control any of the bowls that 7-5 or 6-6 teams go to. Same with the argument that the BCS tries to bribe all the non AQ schools by having a lot of bowls. The BCS is responsible for their 5 games, nothing else, right?
