PonyTime, I think the distinction Stallion correctly draws between the SMU case and the Alabama case is that in the SMU case it really was a matter of the University itself committing the violations. If I'm not mistaken, the Alabama case involved a renegade booster or boosters, who were not official reps. of the university. No doubt the two cases are similar to the extent they involved out of control boosters. The difference is that in one case, the university itself was up to its elbows in the violations, and in the other case it wasn't.

You refer in your post to, "the school that is toying with kids lives and BUYING players from HS Coaches???????" There is no evidence that the university of Alabama (the school) did any such thing. There is evidence that certain boosters did.

No. No. No. Again, while I am sure that what happened at Alabama involved more than "one lone renegade booster," there was no EVIDENCE that the institution had a direct role in, or knowledge of, the violations. Does that mean the institution was not involved? I'm not saying that. What I am saying is that the NCAA can only act on the evidence, not speculation. When it came to direct evidence of deep institutional involvement in major, repeated violations, the SMU case stands alone.

oh, so as long as the president or AD is patently naive, dumb, ignorant or just a good liar, bagmen can do whatever they want and the worst you'll get is 4 lost scholarships and miss a bowl when you wouldnt have been in a one anyway. Yea, thats proportionate. Again, I am not defending SMUs actions, its simply a matter of equity and consistency. I admit I don't remember everything about it, but if SMU was so obstinate and confrontational with the NCAA, did it appeal the penalty or file a lawsuit? If not, why not? Thats what a confrontational set of people would do and continue to do. Ya know, SMU must have become cooperative at some point because Shields was fired and Clements and other boosters were banned. The NCAA can't fire a schools president can they? So where was the leniancy and mercy shown to nearly every other school? The fact is the NCAA became personally vindictive to SMU based on ego and what they should have done is stop short of the DP and insist on a change of administration and ban on Clements along with serious sanctions.

there are other ways of proving lack of institutional control but clearly the easiest from a legal perspective is when the highest ranking officier of a university admits involvement, authorization and ratification of the cheaters actions. That's truly an open and shut case and for Mr. Clement and his cronnies' stupidity we clearly deserve everything we got except the Ken Pye Penalty.

yep, truly beyond stupid. Maybe they should have invoked the insanity defense because no one in their right mind could have been so stupid. In the end, I go back to the crime being the systematic payment of players. The truth is the Aggies had a system, the Horns did, TCU did everyone did. We are not talking about random or sporadic lone bagmen here or anywhere else. Yes, SMU's system of payment was less palatable than what we IMAGINE the other ones were. If Texas had done the same thing, do you believe for one second that they would have been exposed and given the DP? Hell no. Texas was cheating just as bad in substance, as TCU or SMU, but who got the high profile punishments?

Can we get over our involvment. We did stupid things. SMU acted in a poor manner. BUT..

So has michigan and alabama. To say that only SMU's prez and Bored of Trustees knew, and bama's and michigan's didn't is just as incredulous. They know. Oh yea, I'm sure that it was just some "independent" boosters acting without knowledge of the unviversity. Yea. And monkeys are flying out of my butt right now. I mean, michigaan has been chating for years, alabama too. Think back. Anybody else remember a guy named Anthony Carter going to michigan? You think he left his home to play receiver for Bo to become a great receiver?

In LA back in the '80 a guy named Williams left to play bball for lsu. Two months later, sudden;ly his mom bought a big new house. Gee, wonder how that happened? And I bet you would believe lsu had "nothing to do with it or knew about it?"

I'm tired of all the bs. All I know is that I want SMU to stay the reasonable course. Get better, win, and look good.

Here's to the Ponies!
